Translation
✧ [The capture of ʿAmr b. Abī Sufyān and his release] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr related to me, saying: ʿAmr b. Abī Sufyān b. Ḥarb—and he belonged to the daughter of ʿUqbah b. Abī Muʿayṭ—Ibn Hishām said: The mother of ʿAmr b. Abī Sufyān was the daughter of Abī ʿAmr, and she was the sister of Abī Muʿayṭ b. Abī ʿAmr—was a prisoner in the hands of the Messenger of God ﷺ, one of the prisoners of Badr. Ibn Hishām said: ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib captured him. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr related to me, saying: It was said to Abū Sufyān: Ransom your son ʿAmr. He said: Shall my blood and my wealth be combined against me? They killed Ḥanẓalah, and shall I ransom ʿAmr? Leave him in their hands; let them hold him as long as they please. He said: While he was thus confined in Madinah with the Messenger of God ﷺ, Saʿd b. al-Nuʿmān b. Akkāl, the brother of the Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf, then one of the Banū Muʿāwiyah, went out to perform ʿumrah, accompanied by a riding camel of his. He was an elderly Muslim, with some sheep of his at al-Naqīʿ. He left there to perform ʿumrah, not fearing what would be done to him; he did not think that he would be detained in Makkah, since he had come only for ʿumrah. The Quraysh had made a pact not to accost anyone who came as a pilgrim or for ʿumrah except with good. But Abū Sufyān b. Ḥarb attacked him in Makkah and detained him in place of his son ʿAmr. Then Abū Sufyān said: O clan of Ibn Akkāl, answer his call; you have made a pact not to abandon the elderly chief. For the Banū ʿAmr are base and abased if they do not release their captive from his shackles. Ḥassān b. Thābit answered him, saying: If Saʿd had been set free on the day of Makkah, he would have wrought much slaughter among you before being taken captive, with the sharp edge of a sword or with a yellow bow of nabʿ wood that hums when it is strung and drives the arrows forth. The Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf went to the Messenger of God ﷺ and told him his news, and they asked him to give them ʿAmr b. Abī Sufyān so that they might ransom their companion with him. The Messenger of God ﷺ did so, and they sent him to Abū Sufyān, and he released Saʿd.
