Translation

✧ [ The matter of Suhayl b. ʿAmr and his ransom ] ( He said ): Then Quraysh sent concerning the ransom of the captives, and Mikraz b. Ḥafṣ b. al-Akhyaf came concerning the ransom of Suhayl b. ʿAmr. The one who had captured him was Mālik b. al-Dukhshum, brother of the Banū Sālim b. ʿAwf, and he said:: I captured Suhayl, so I seek no captive in exchange for him from all the nations, And Khindaf knows that the young man is her young man — Suhayl, when one is wronged. I struck with the blade until it bent, and I forced myself against the one of the banner. Suhayl was a man with a split in his lower lip. Ibn Hishām said: Some of the people of knowledge of poetry reject this poetry as being by Mālik b. al-Dukhshum. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. ʿAmr b. ʿAṭāʾ, brother of the Banū ʿĀmir b. Luʾayy, related to me that ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said to the Messenger of God ﷺ: O Messenger of God, let me pull out the two front teeth of Suhayl b. ʿAmr, and his tongue would loll out, so that he will never stand before you as an orator in any place ever. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: I will not mutilate him, lest God mutilate me, even if I were a prophet. Ibn Isḥāq said: It has reached me that the Messenger of God ﷺ said to ʿUmar concerning this account: It may be that he will stand in a station that you will not blame. Ibn Hishām said: I shall mention the account of that station in its proper place, if God Almighty wills. Ibn Isḥāq said: When Mikraz negotiated with them concerning him and reached their satisfaction, they said: Bring what is due to us. He said: Put my leg in place of his leg, and set him free until he sends you his ransom. So they set Suhayl free and detained Mikraz in his place with them. Mikraz said:: I ransomed with eight herds — a captive youth whose fine reaches the core, not the clients. I pledged my two hands, and wealth is lighter upon me than my two hands, but I feared the disgraces. And I said: Suhayl is the best of us, so take him away for our children until we bring about the desires. Ibn Hishām said: Some of the people of knowledge of poetry reject this as being by Mikraz.
