Quraysh's lamentation over their dead

Translation

✧ [Quraysh's wailing over their slain] Ibn Isḥāq said: Yaḥyā b. ʿAbbād b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Zubayr related to me, from his father ʿAbbād, who said: Quraysh wailed over their slain. Then they said: "Do not do it, lest it reach Muḥammad and his companions and they gloat over you. And do not send [ransom] for your captives until you have waited with them, so that Muḥammad and his companions do not take advantage of you in the ransom." He said: Al-Aswad b. al-Muṭṭalib had lost three of his sons: Zamʿah b. al-Aswad, ʿAqīl b. al-Aswad, and al-Ḥārith b. Zamʿah. He wished to weep over his sons. While he was in that state, he heard a woman wailing at night. He said to a slave of his—his sight had gone: "Look and see whether lamentation has been permitted, whether Quraysh has wept over its slain. Perhaps I may weep over Abū Ḥakīmah—meaning Zamʿah—for my innermost self has burned." He said: When the slave returned to him, he said: "It is only a woman weeping over a camel of hers that she has lost." He said: That is when al-Aswad said: "Does she weep because a camel of hers has strayed, while sleeplessness keeps her from sleep? So do not weep over a young camel, but over Badr, where the fortunes fell short. Over Badr, [weep for] the nobles of Banū Huṣayṣ, Makhzūm, and the clan of Abū al-Walīd. And weep, if you weep, over ʿAqīl, and weep over Ḥārith, the lion of lions. And weep for them, and do not name them all together—for Abū Ḥakīmah has no equal. Indeed, after them, men have become leaders, and were it not for the day of Badr, they would not have become leaders." Ibn Hishām said: This is iqwāʾ, and it is a well-known poem of theirs, but in our view it is ikfāʾ. We have omitted from Ibn Isḥāq's narration what is more famous than this. Ibn Isḥāq said: Among the captives was Abū Wadāʿah b. Ḍubayrah al-Sahmī. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "He has in Makkah a clever son who is a wealthy merchant, and it is as if he has already come to you seeking his father's ransom." When Quraysh said: "Do not hasten to ransom your captives, lest Muḥammad and his companions take advantage of you," al-Muṭṭalib b. Abī Wadāʿah—who was the one the Messenger of God ﷺ meant—said: "You are right; do not hasten." Then he slipped away at night and arrived in Madinah, and he took his father for four thousand dirhams and departed with him.
