The news of Quraysh's disaster reaching Makkah

Translation

✧ [The news of Quraysh's losses reaching Makkah] Ibn Hisham said: Abu Aziz was the bearer of the polytheists' banner at Badr after al-Nadr b. al-Harith. When his brother Mus'ab b. Umayr said to Abu al-Yasar—who had captured him—what he said, Abu Aziz said to him: "O my brother, this is your charge concerning me." Mus'ab said to him: "He is my brother rather than you." His mother asked about the highest ransom paid for a Qurayshi, and she was told: "Four thousand dirhams." So she sent four thousand dirhams and ransomed him with them. Ibn Ishaq said: The first to come to Makkah with the news of Quraysh's losses was al-Haysuman b. Abd Allah al-Khuza'i. They said: "What is behind you?" He said: "Utbah b. Rabi'ah has been killed, and Shaybah b. Rabi'ah, and Abu al-Hakam b. Hisham, and Umayyah b. Khalaf, and Zam'ah b. al-Aswad, and Nubayh and Munabbih the two sons of al-Hajjaj, and Abu al-Bakhtari b. Hisham." When he began to enumerate the nobles of Quraysh, Safwan b. Umayyah, who was sitting in the Hijr, said: "By God, if this one is sane, ask him about me." They said: "And what did Safwan b. Umayyah do?" He said: "There he is, sitting in the Hijr. By God, I have indeed seen his father and his brother when they were killed." Ibn Ishaq said: Husayn b. Abd Allah b. Ubayd Allah b. Abbas narrated to me, from Ikrimah, the client of Ibn Abbas, who said: Abu Rafi', the client of the Messenger of God ﷺ, said: I was a slave belonging to al-Abbas b. Abd al-Muttalib, and Islam had entered us, the people of the house. Al-Abbas became a Muslim, and Umm al-Fadl became a Muslim, and I became a Muslim. Al-Abbas was afraid of his people and disliked opposing them, and he concealed his Islam. He had great wealth dispersed among his people. Abu Lahab had stayed behind from Badr and sent in his place al-Asi b. Hisham b. al-Mughirah. Thus they used to do: no man stayed behind but sent another in his place. When the news came to him of the losses of the people of Badr from Quraysh, God crushed him and disgraced him, and we found in ourselves strength and honor. He said: I was a weak man, and I used to make drinking bowls, carving them in the chamber of Zamzam. By God, I was sitting there carving my bowls, with Umm al-Fadl sitting near me, and the news that had come to us had pleased us, when Abu Lahab came dragging his feet with evil, until he sat on the rope of the chamber. His back was to my back. While he was sitting, the people said: "This is Abu Sufyan b. al-Harith b. Abd al-Muttalib—Ibn Hisham said: Abu Sufyan's name is al-Mughirah—he has arrived." He said: Abu Lahab said: "Come to me, for by my life, you have the news." He said: He sat down beside him while the people stood over him. He said: "O son of my brother, tell me how the affair of the people was." He said: "By God, it was nothing but that we met the people and offered them our shoulders; they drove us however they wished and took us captive however they wished. And by God, with that I do not blame the people. We met white men on piebald horses, between heaven and earth. By God, they do not spare anything, and nothing stands against them." Abu Rafi' said: I lifted the rope of the chamber with my hands, then I said: "Those, by God, are the angels." He said: Abu Lahab raised his hand and struck my face with it a severe blow. He said: I resisted him, so he lifted me and threw me to the ground, then knelt over me hitting me. I was a weak man. Umm al-Fadl rose to a pillar of the chamber's pillars, took it, and struck him with it a blow that opened a severe gash in his head. She said: "You have taken advantage of his weakness because his master is absent from him." He stood up turning away humiliated. By God, he lived only seven nights until God smote him with the 'adasah and it killed him.
