The Killing of al-Naḍr and ʿUqbah

Translation

✧ The killing of al-Naḍr and ʿUqbah. Ibn Isḥāq said: When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ reached al-Ṣafrāʾ, al-Naḍr b. al-Ḥārith was killed; ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib killed him, as some of the people of knowledge from the people of Makkah informed me. Ibn Isḥāq said: Then he departed until, when he was at ʿIrq al-Ẓabyah, ʿUqbah b. Abī Muʿayṭ was killed. Ibn Hishām said: ʿIrq al-Ẓabyah is from other than Ibn Isḥāq. Ibn Isḥāq said: The one who captured ʿUqbah was ʿAbd Allāh b. Salamah, one of the Banū al-ʿAjlān. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿUqbah said, when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered his killing: “Who will care for the children, O Muḥammad?” He said: “The fire.” Then ʿĀṣim b. Thābit b. Abī al-Aqlaḥ al-Anṣārī, the brother of the Banū ʿAmr b. ʿAwf, killed him, as Abū ʿUbaydah b. Muḥammad b. ʿAmmār b. Yāsir narrated to me. Ibn Hishām said: It is said that ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib killed him, according to what Ibn Shihāb al-Zuhrī and others from the people of knowledge mentioned to me. Ibn Isḥāq said: At that place, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was met by Abū Hind, the mawlā of Farwah b. ʿAmr al-Bayāḍī, with a ḥamīt filled with ḥays. Ibn Hishām said: Al-ḥamīt is the waterskin. He had remained behind from Badr, then he witnessed all the battles with the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he was the cupper of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: “He is only Abū Hind, a man of the Anṣār, so marry him off, and marry from him.” So they did. Ibn Isḥāq said: Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ went on until he arrived in Madinah one day before the captives. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr narrated to me that Yaḥyā b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Asʿad b. Zurārah said: The captives were brought when they were brought, while Sawdah bt. Zamʿah, the wife of the Prophet ﷺ, was with the family of ʿAfrāʾ, in their mourning for ʿAwf and Muʿawwidh, the two sons of ʿAfrāʾ. That was before the veil was imposed upon them. He said: Sawdah said: By Allah, I was with them when it was brought to us, and it was said: “These are the captives; they have been brought.” She said: So I returned to my house, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in it. There was Abū Yazīd Suhayl b. ʿAmr in a corner of the room, his hands tied to his neck with a rope. She said: By Allah, I could not control myself when I saw Abū Yazīd like that, and I said: “O Abū Yazīd, did you give your hands? Would that you had died nobly!” By Allah, nothing alerted me except the words of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ from inside the house: “O Sawdah, do you incite against Allah and His Messenger?” She said: I said: “O Messenger of Allah, by Him who sent you with the truth, I could not control myself when I saw Abū Yazīd with his hands tied to his neck, from saying what I said.” Ibn Isḥāq said: Nubayyih b. Wahb, the brother of the Banū ʿAbd al-Dār, narrated to me that when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ returned with the captives, he distributed them among his companions and said: “Treat the captives well.” He said: Abū ʿAzīz b. ʿUmayr b. Hāshim, the full brother of Muṣʿab b. ʿUmayr, was among the captives. He said: Abū ʿAzīz said: My brother Muṣʿab b. ʿUmayr passed by me while a man of the Anṣār was taking me captive, and he said: “Bind his hands tightly with him, for his mother has wealth; perhaps she will ransom him from you.” He said: I was among a group of the Anṣār when they brought me from Badr. Whenever they set out their breakfast or dinner, they would single me out with the bread, and they ate dates, because of the instructions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ to them concerning us. No piece of bread fell into the hand of any of them but he would toss it to me. He said: I would feel ashamed and return it to one of them, and he would return it to me without touching it.
