Mention of the Spoils at Badr and the Captives
[ ذِكْرُ الْفَيْءِ بِبَدْرِ وَالْأُسَارَى ] ثُمَّ إنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ أَمَرَ بِمَا فِي الْعَسْكَرِ، مِمَّا جَمَعَ النَّاسُ، فَجَمَعَ، فَاخْتَلَفَ الْمُسْلِمُونَ فِيهِ، فَقَالَ مَنْ جَمَعَهُ: هُوَ لَنَا، وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا يُقَاتِلُونَ الْعَدُوَّ وَيَطْلُبُونَهُ: وَاَللَّهِ لَوْلَا نَحْنُ مَا أَصَبْتُمُوهُ لَنَحْنُ شَغَلَنَا عَنْكُمْ الْقَوْمُ حَتَّى أَصَبْتُمْ مَا أَصَبْتُمْ، وَقَالَ الَّذِينَ كَانُوا يَحْرُسُونَ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ مَخَافَةَ أَنْ يُخَالِفَ إلَيْهِ الْعَدُوُّ: وَاَللَّهِ مَا أَنْتُمْ بِأَحَقَّ بِهِ مِنَّا، وَاَللَّهِ لَقَدْ رَأَيْنَا أَنْ نَقْتُلَ الْعَدُوَّ إذْ مَنَحَنَا اللَّهُ تَعَالَى أَكْتَافَهُ، وَلَقَدْ رَأَيْنَا أَنْ نَأْخُذَ الْمَتَاعَ حِينَ لَمْ يَكُنْ دُونَهُ مَنْ يَمْنَعُهُ وَلَكِنَّا خِفْنَا عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ كَرَّةَ الْعَدُوِّ، فَقُمْنَا دُونَهُ، فَمَا أَنْتُمْ بِأَحَقَّ بِهِ مِنَّا. قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَحَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ وَغَيْرُهُ مِنْ أَصْحَابِنَا عَنْ سُلَيْمَانَ ابْنِ مُوسَى، عَنْ مَكْحُولٍ، عَنْ أَبِي أُمَامَةَ الْبَاهِلِيِّ - وَاسْمُهُ صُدَيُّ بْنُ عَجْلَانَ فِيمَا قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ - قَالَ: سَأَلْتُ عُبَادَةَ بْنَ الصَّامِتِ عَنْ الْأَنْفَالِ، فَقَالَ: فِينَا أَصْحَابُ بَدْرٍ نَزَلَتْ حِينَ اخْتَلَفْنَا فِي النَّفَلِ، وَسَاءَتْ فِيهِ أَخْلَاقُنَا، فَنَزَعَهُ اللَّهُ مِنْ أَيْدِينَا، فَجَعَلَهُ إلَى رَسُولِهِ، فَقَسَمَهُ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بَيْنَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ عَنْ بَوَاءٍ يَقُولُ: عَلَى السَّوَاءِ. قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَحَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ، قَالَ: حَدَّثَنِي بَعْضُ بَنِي سَاعِدَةَ عَنْ أَبِي أُسَيْدٍ السَّاعِدِيِّ مَالِكِ بْنِ رَبِيعَةَ، قَالَ: أَصَبْتُ سَيْفَ بَنِي عَائِذٍ الْمَخْزُومِيِّينَ الَّذِي يُسَمَّى الْمَرْزُبَانَ يَوْمَ بَدْرٍ، فَلَمَّا أَمَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ النَّاسَ أَنْ يَرُدُّوا مَا فِي أَيْدِيهِمْ مِنْ النَّفَلِ، أَقْبَلْتُ حَتَّى أَلْقَيْتُهُ فِي النَّفَلِ. قَالَ: وَكَانَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ لَا يَمْنَعُ شَيْئًا سُئِلَهُ، فَعَرَفَهُ الْأَرْقَمُ بْنُ أَبِي الْأَرْقَمِ، فَسَأَلَهُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ، فَأَعْطَاهُ إيَّاهُ
Translation
✧ [Mention of the spoils at Badr and the captives] Then the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered what was in the camp, from what the people had gathered, to be collected, and it was collected. The Muslims disagreed concerning it. Those who had gathered it said: It is ours. Those who were fighting the enemy and pursuing him said: By Allah, had it not been for us, you would not have obtained it. We kept the people occupied from you until you obtained what you obtained. Those who were guarding the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for fear that the enemy might turn against him said: By Allah, you are not more entitled to it than we are. By Allah, we considered killing the enemy when Allah, the Exalted, gave us their shoulders, and we considered taking the goods when there was none before them to prevent it, but we feared for the Messenger of Allah ﷺ a return of the enemy, so we stood before him. You are not more entitled to it than we are. Ibn Ishaq said: Abd al-Rahman b. al-Harith and others of our companions related to me from Sulayman b. Musa, from Makhul, from Abu Umamah al-Bahili—his name being Sudayy b. Ajlan, as Ibn Hisham said—who said: I asked Ubadah b. al-Samit about the spoils (anfal). He said: It was revealed concerning us, the companions of Badr, when we disagreed about the spoil and our manners became bad regarding it. So Allah took it from our hands and gave it to His Messenger, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ divided it among the Muslims equally, saying: on an equal footing. Ibn Ishaq said: Abd Allah b. Abi Bakr related to me, saying: Some of the Banu Saidah related to me from Abu Usayd al-Saidi Malik b. Rabiah, who said: I obtained the sword of the Banu Aidh al-Makhzumiyyin, called al-Marwaban, on the day of Badr. When the Messenger of Allah ﷺ ordered the people to return what was in their hands from the spoil, I came and threw it into the spoil. He said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ did not refuse anything he was asked for, so al-Arqam b. Abi al-Arqam recognized it and asked the Messenger of Allah ﷺ for it, and he gave it to him.
