The Casting of the Polytheists into the Well
[ ذِكْرُ الْفِتْيَةِ الَّذِينَ نَزَلَ فِيهِمْ إنَّ الَّذِينَ تَوَفَّاهُمْ الْمَلَائِكَةُ ظَالِمِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ ] وَكَانَ الْفِتْيَةُ الَّذِينَ قُتِلُوا بِبَدْرِ، فَنَزَلَ فِيهِمْ مِنْ الْقُرْآنِ، فِيمَا ذُكِرَ لَنَا: إِنَّ الَّذِينَ تَوَفَّاهُمُ الْمَلَائِكَةُ ظَالِمِي أَنْفُسِهِمْ قَالُوا فِيمَ كُنْتُمْ قَالُوا كُنَّا مُسْتَضْعَفِينَ فِي الْأَرْضِ قَالُوا أَلَمْ تَكُنْ أَرْضُ اللَّهِ وَاسِعَةً فَتُهَاجِرُوا فِيهَا فَأُولَئِكَ مَأْوَاهُمْ جَهَنَّمُ وَسَاءَتْ مَصِيرًا فِتْيَةً مُسْلِمِينَ مِنْ بَنِي أَسَدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْعُزَّى بْنِ قُصَيٍّ: الْحَارِثُ بْنُ زَمَعَةَ بْنِ الْأَسْوَدِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ ابْنِ أَسَدٍ. وَمِنْ بَنِي مَخْزُومٍ: أَبُو قَيْسِ بْنُ الْفَاكِهِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ مَخْزُومٍ، وَأَبُو قَيْسِ بْنُ الْوَلِيدِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ بْنِ مَخْزُومٍ. وَمِنْ بَنِي جُمَحَ: عَلِيُّ بْنُ أُمَيَّةَ بْنِ خَلَفِ بْنِ وَهْبِ بْنِ حُذَافَةَ بْنِ جُمَحَ وَمِنْ بَنِي سَهْمٍ: الْعَاصِ بْنُ مُنَبَّهِ بْنِ الْحَجَّاجِ بْنِ عَامِرِ بْنِ حُذَيْفَةَ بْنِ سَعْدِ ابْنِ سَهْمٍ. وَذَلِكَ أَنَّهُمْ كَانُوا أَسْلَمُوا، وَرَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ بِمَكَّةَ، فَلَمَّا هَاجَرَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ إلَى الْمَدِينَةِ حَبَسَهُمْ آبَاؤُهُمْ وَعَشَائِرُهُمْ بِمَكَّةَ وَفَتَنُوهُمْ فَافْتَتَنُوا، ثُمَّ سَارُوا مَعَ قَوْمِهِمْ إلَى بَدْرٍ فَأُصِيبُوا بِهِ جَمِيعًا
Translation
✧ [Mention of the young men concerning whom the words were revealed: 'Verily, those whom the angels take in death while wronging themselves'] The young men who were killed at Badr, and concerning whom the Qur'an was revealed, as it has been mentioned to us: 'Verily, those whom the angels take in death while wronging themselves, they [the angels] say: In what condition were you? They say: We were weak and oppressed in the earth. They [the angels] say: Was not Allah's earth spacious so that you might emigrate therein? Then those, their abode is Hell, and evil is the destination'—these were Muslim young men from Banū Asad b. ʿAbd al-ʿUzzā b. Quṣayy: al-Ḥārith b. Zamaʿa b. al-Aswad b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib b. Asad. And from Banū Makhzūm: Abū Qays b. al-Fākih b. al-Mughīra b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Makhzūm, and Abū Qays b. al-Walīd b. al-Mughīra b. ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿUmar b. Makhzūm. And from Banū Jumaḥ: ʿAlī b. Umayya b. Khalaf b. Wahb b. Ḥudhāfa b. Jumaḥ. And from Banū Sahm: al-ʿĀṣ b. Munabbih b. al-Ḥajjāj b. ʿĀmir b. Ḥudhayfa b. Saʿd b. Sahm. That was because they had become Muslims while the Messenger of Allah ﷺ was in Makkah. Then when the Messenger of Allah ﷺ emigrated to Madinah, their fathers and clans detained them in Makkah and tempted them, and they fell into temptation. Then they marched with their people to Badr and were all killed there.
