The Battle Cry of the Muslims at Badr

Translation

✧ ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd passed by Abū Jahl when the Messenger of God ﷺ had ordered that he be sought among the slain. The Messenger of God ﷺ had said to them—as far as it has reached me—: "Look, if he is hidden from you among the slain, for the trace of a wound in his knee, for I once crowded together with him at a banquet of ʿAbd Allāh b. Judʿān when we were two boys, and I was a little taller than him. I pushed him and he fell on his knees, and one of them was scraped with a scrape whose trace did not cease to remain on him." ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd said: I found him at the last gasp and recognized him, and I placed my foot on his neck. He said: He had once seized me in Makkah and harmed me and struck me. Then I said to him: Has God disgraced you, O enemy of God? He said: And with what has He disgraced me? Is there anyone greater than a man whom you have killed? Tell me: for whom is the turn of fortune today? He said: I said: For God and His Messenger. Ibn Hishām said: ḍabatha means he seized him and clung to him. Ḍābiʾ b. al-Ḥārith al-Burjumī said: So I became, of what was between me and you of affection, like one who seizes water with his hand. Ibn Hishām said: It is also said: "Is there any shame upon a man whom you have killed? Tell me: for whom is the turn of fortune today?" Ibn Isḥāq said: Men of Banū Makhzūm claimed that Ibn Masʿūd used to say: He said to me: You have climbed a difficult ascent, O little shepherd of sheep. He said: Then I severed his head and brought it to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and I said: O Messenger of God, this is the head of the enemy of God, Abū Jahl. He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: By God, other than whom there is no god—he said: and that was the oath of the Messenger of God ﷺ—he said: I said: Yes, by God, other than whom there is no god. Then I cast his head before the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he praised God. Ibn Hishām said: Abū ʿUbaydah and others of the people of knowledge of the campaigns related to me that ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb said to Saʿīd b. al-ʿĀṣ, when he passed by him: I see you as though there is something in your mind; I see you think that I killed your father. If I had killed him, I would not apologize to you for killing him. But I killed my maternal uncle al-ʿĀṣ b. Hishām b. al-Mughīrah. As for your father, I passed by him while he was pawing the ground as a bull paws with its horn, so I turned aside from him, and his cousin ʿAlī made for him and killed him.
