The Battle Cry of the Muslims at Badr
Translation
✧ [Return to the killing of Abū Jahl] Ibn Isḥāq said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ had finished with his enemy, he ordered that Abū Jahl be sought among the slain. The first to encounter Abū Jahl, as Thawr b. Yazīd related to me, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, and ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr also related that to me, they both said: Muʿādh b. ʿAmr b. al-Jamūḥ, brother of the Banū Salamah, said: I heard the people, while Abū Jahl was in a thicket like a ḥarajah — Ibn Hishām said: al-ḥarajah is the tangled trees. And in the ḥadīth from ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb: that he asked a bedouin about al-ḥarajah, and he said: It is a tree among the trees that cannot be reached — and they were saying: Abū al-Ḥakam cannot be gotten to. He said: When I heard that, I made it my concern, and I made straight for him. When I got the chance, I charged at him and struck him a blow that severed his foot at the middle of his shin. By God, when it flew off, I could only liken it to a date pit flying from beneath a date pit crusher when it is struck with it. He said: His son ʿIkrimah struck me on my shoulder and cut off my hand, and it hung by a piece of skin from my side, and the fighting forced me away from him. I fought for the rest of my day, and indeed I was dragging it behind me. When it hurt me, I put my foot on it, then I stretched myself over it until I threw it off. Ibn Isḥāq said: He lived after that until the time of ʿUthmān. Then Muʿawwidh b. ʿAfrāʾ passed by Abū Jahl while he was wounded and incapacitated, and struck him until he pinned him down, and left him while there was still a spark of life in him. Muʿawwidh fought until he was killed.
