The Story of ʿUkkāshah's Sword
Translation
✧ [The story of ʿUkkāshah's sword] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿUkkāshah b. Miḥṣan b. Ḥurthān al-Asadī, the confederate of the Banū ʿAbd Shams b. ʿAbd Manāf, fought on the day of Badr with his sword until it broke in his hand. He came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he gave him a stick of firewood, saying: “Fight with this, O ʿUkkāshah.” When he took it from the Messenger of God ﷺ, he shook it, and it became a sword in his hand, tall of stature, strong of blade, and white of edge. He fought with it until God, Exalted is He, granted victory to the Muslims. That sword was called al-ʿAwn. It remained with him, and he witnessed the battles with the Messenger of God ﷺ with it until he was killed during the apostasy while it was still with him. Ṭulayḥah b. Khuwaylid al-Asadī killed him, and Ṭulayḥah said about that: What is your thought of a people when you kill them—were they not, even if they had not submitted, men? If herds were struck down and women, you will not go away free of blame for killing Ḥibāl. I set before them the front of the shoulder-strap; it is one that returns, it is said, when the champions come down to fight. One day you see it in the saddle-cloths, protected; another day you see it without saddle-cloths; on the evening when I left Ibn Aqram lying low, and ʿUkkāshah al-Ghanmī beside the bridal curtains. Ibn Hishām said: Ḥibāl is the son of Ṭulayḥah b. Khuwaylid. Ibn Aqram is Thābit b. Aqram al-Anṣārī. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿUkkāshah b. Miḥṣan is the one who spoke to the Messenger of God ﷺ when the Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Seventy thousand of my community will enter Paradise in the form of the full moon.” He said: “O Messenger of God, pray to God that He make me one of them.” He said: “You are one of them,” or “O God, make him one of them.” Then a man from the Anṣār stood up and said: “O Messenger of God, pray to God that He make me one of them.” He said: “ʿUkkāshah beat you to it, and the prayer has cooled.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said, according to what has reached us from his people: “Among us is the best horseman of the Arabs.” They said: “Who is he, O Messenger of God?” He said: “ʿUkkāshah b. Miḥṣan.” Ḍirār b. al-Azwar al-Asadī said: “That is a man from us, O Messenger of God.” He said: “He is not from you, but he is from us because of the alliance.”
