The Angels' Witnessing of the Battle of Badr

Translation

✧ [The angels' witnessing the Battle of Badr] Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr related to me that he was told on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: A man from Banū Ghifār related to me, saying: I set out with a cousin of mine until we climbed a mountain overlooking Badr, while we were polytheists, waiting for the battle to see upon whom the defeat would fall, so that we might plunder along with those who plundered. He said: While we were on the mountain, a cloud drew near us, and we heard in it the neighing of horses, and I heard a speaker saying, "Advance, Ḥayzūm!" As for my cousin, the covering of his heart was removed, and he died on the spot. As for me, I nearly perished, but then I held myself together. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr related to me, from some of the Banū Sāʿidah, from Abū Usayd Mālik b. Rabīʿah, who had witnessed Badr, that he said, after his sight had gone: If I were today at Badr with my sight, I would show you the ravine from which the angels emerged, not doubting it or disputing it. Ibn Isḥāq said: My father Isḥāq b. Yasār related to me, from men of Banū Māzin b. al-Najjār, from Abū Dāwūd al-Māzinī, who had witnessed Badr, that he said: I was pursuing a man of the polytheists on the day of Badr to strike him, when his head fell before my sword reached him, and I knew that someone other than me had killed him. Ibn Isḥāq said: One whom I do not distrust related to me from Miqsam, client of ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith, from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās, who said: The distinguishing mark of the angels on the day of Badr was white turbans, which they had let down over their backs, and on the day of Ḥunayn red turbans. Ibn Hishām said: One of the people of knowledge related to me that ʿAlī b. Abī Ṭālib said: Turbans are the crowns of the Arabs. The distinguishing mark of the angels on the day of Badr was white turbans, which they had loosened over their backs, except for Gabriel, for he had a yellow turban. Ibn Isḥāq said: One whom I do not distrust related to me from Miqsam, from Ibn ʿAbbās, who said: The angels did not fight on any day other than Badr, and on days other than that they were a number and reinforcement, not striking.
