The Killing of Umayyah b. Khalaf
Translation
✧ The Killing of Umayyah b. Khalaf Ibn Ishaq said: Yahya b. ʿAbbad b. ʿAbd Allah b. al-Zubayr related to me, from his father. Ibn Ishaq said: And ʿAbd Allah b. Abi Bakr and others also related it to me, from ʿAbd al-Rahman b. ʿAwf, who said: Umayyah b. Khalaf was a friend of mine in Makkah. My name was ʿAbd ʿAmr, but when I embraced Islam I named myself ʿAbd al-Rahman, while we were still in Makkah. He used to meet me while we were in Makkah and say, "O ʿAbd ʿAmr, have you turned away from the name your parents gave you?" I would say, "Yes." He would say, "I do not know al-Rahman. So appoint something between me and you by which I may call you. As for you, you will not answer me by your first name, and as for me, I will not call you by what I do not know." He said: So when he called me, "O ʿAbd ʿAmr," I would not answer him. He said: I said to him, "O Abu ʿAli, appoint whatever you wish." He said, "Then you are ʿAbd al-Ilah." He said: I said, "Yes." He said: So when I passed by him he would say, "O ʿAbd al-Ilah," and I would answer him and converse with him. Until when it was the day of Badr, I passed by him while he was standing with his son, ʿAli b. Umayyah, holding his hand. With me were some coats of mail which I had taken as spoils, and I was carrying them. When he saw me he said to me, "O ʿAbd ʿAmr," but I did not answer him. He said, "O ʿAbd al-Ilah?" I said, "Yes." He said, "Will you take me? For I am better for you than these coats of mail that are with you." He said: I said, "Yes, by Allah, here." He said: So I threw the coats of mail from my hand and took his hand and his son's hand, while he was saying, "I have never seen anything like today. Do you not have any need for milk?" He said: Then I went out walking with the two of them. Ibn Hisham said: By "milk" he meant that whoever captured me would ransom me with many milk-giving camels. Ibn Ishaq said: ʿAbd al-Wahid b. Abi ʿAwn related to me, from Saʿd b. Ibrahim, from his father ʿAbd al-Rahman b. ʿAwf, who said: Umayyah b. Khalaf said to me, while I was between him and his son, holding their hands, "O ʿAbd al-Ilah, who is the man among you marked with an ostrich feather on his chest?" I said, "That is Hamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muttalib." He said, "That is the one who did such deeds to us." ʿAbd al-Rahman said: By Allah, I was leading the two of them when Bilal saw him with me—and he was the one who used to torture Bilal in Makkah for leaving Islam, bringing him out to the sun-baked ground of Makkah when it was hot, laying him on his back, then ordering a great rock to be placed on his chest, then saying, "You will remain thus until you abandon the religion of Muhammad," and Bilal would say, "One, One." He said: So when he saw him, he said, "The head of disbelief, Umayyah b. Khalaf! May I not be saved if he is saved." I said, "O Bilal, is it my two captives?" He said, "May I not be saved if he is saved." I said, "Do you hear, O son of a black woman?" He said, "May I not be saved if he is saved." Then he shouted at the top of his voice, "O helpers of Allah! The head of disbelief, Umayyah b. Khalaf! May I not be saved if he is saved." He said: So they surrounded us until they made us like in a tight spot, and I was defending him. He said: A man swung the sword and struck the leg of his son, and he fell. Umayyah cried out with a cry the like of which I have never heard. He said: I said, "Save yourself, for there is no escape for you. By Allah, I cannot avail you anything." He said: So they hacked the two of them with their swords until they finished them off. He said: ʿAbd al-Rahman used to say, "May Allah have mercy on Bilal. My coats of mail are gone, and he bereaved me of my two captives."
