The Incitement of the Muslims to Fight
Translation
✧ [The incitement of the Muslims to fight] He said: Then the Messenger of God ﷺ went out to the people and incited them, and said: "By Him in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad, no man fights them today and is killed patiently, seeking reward, advancing and not retreating, but God will admit him to Paradise." Then ʿUmayr b. al-Ḥumām, the brother of the Banū Salimah, said while he had some dates in his hand that he was eating: "Excellent, excellent! Is there anything between me and entering Paradise except that these people kill me?" Then he threw the dates from his hand, took his sword, and fought the people until he was killed. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah narrated to me that ʿAwf b. al-Ḥārith, who is the son of ʿAfrāʾ, said: "O Messenger of God, what makes the Lord laugh at His servant?" He said: "His plunging his hand into the enemy bare-headed." So he took off a coat of mail that was on him and threw it away, then took his sword and fought the people until he was killed.
