Ibn Ghaziyyah and the Messenger's Prodding Him in the Belly with an Arrow Shaft

Translation

✧ [Ibn Ghaziyyah and the Messenger’s striking him in his belly with the arrow] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥibbān b. Wāsiʿ b. Ḥibbān related to me, from elders of his people, that the Messenger of God ﷺ straightened the ranks of his companions on the day of Badr, with an arrow-shaft in his hand, straightening the people with it. He passed by Sawād b. Ghaziyyah, the confederate of the Banū ʿAdī b. al-Najjār—Ibn Hishām said: one says Sawwād, with a doubled wāw, and Sawād in the Anṣār other than this, with a single wāw—while he was protruding from the rank—Ibn Hishām said: one says mustanṣil from the rank—and he was poked in his belly with the arrow-shaft, and he said: “Stand straight, O Sawād.” He said: “O Messenger of God, you have hurt me, and God has sent you with the truth and justice.” He said: “Then grant me retaliation.” So the Messenger of God ﷺ uncovered his belly, and said: “Take your retaliation.” He said: Then he embraced him and kissed his belly. He said: “What moved you to do this, O Sawād?” He said: “O Messenger of God, what you see has come; I wanted the last contact with you to be that my skin touches your skin.” So the Messenger of God ﷺ prayed for good for him, and said it to him.
