ʿUtbah's Challenge to Single Combat
Translation
✧ [ʿUtbah’s call to single combat] He said: Then ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah came out, between his brother Shaybah b. Rabīʿah and his son al-Walīd b. ʿUtbah, until when he separated from the ranks he called for single combat. Three young men of the Anṣār went out to him: ʿAwf and Muʿawwidh, the two sons of al-Ḥārith — their mother was ʿAfrāʾ — and another man, said to be ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah. They said: Who are you? They said: A band from the Anṣār. They said: We have no need of you. Then a crier of theirs called out: O Muḥammad, send out to us our equals from our own people! The Messenger of God ﷺ said: Rise, O ʿUbaydah b. al-Ḥārith; rise, O Ḥamzah; rise, O ʿAlī. When they rose and drew near to them, they said: Who are you? ʿUbaydah said: ʿUbaydah; Ḥamzah said: Ḥamzah; ʿAlī said: ʿAlī. They said: Yes, noble equals. Then ʿUbaydah, who was the eldest of the party, fought ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah in single combat; Ḥamzah fought Shaybah b. Rabīʿah; and ʿAlī fought al-Walīd b. ʿUtbah. As for Ḥamzah, he gave Shaybah no respite before killing him; as for ʿAlī, he gave al-Walīd no respite before killing him; while ʿUbaydah and ʿUtbah exchanged two blows between them, each disabling the other; then Ḥamzah and ʿAlī turned with their swords upon ʿUtbah and dispatched him, and carried off their companion and brought him to his comrades. Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah related to me that ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah said to the young men of the Anṣār, when they gave their lineage: Noble equals, but we only want our own people.
