Quraysh's Consultation about Withdrawing from Battle
Translation
✧ The slaying of al-Aswad al-Makhzūmī. Ibn Isḥāq said: Al-Aswad b. ʿAbd al-Asad al-Makhzūmī came forth, and he was a man of harsh, bad character. He said: 'I vow to God that I will drink from their cistern, or I will destroy it, or I will die before reaching it.' When he came forth, Ḥamzah b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib went out to meet him. When they met, Ḥamzah struck him and cut off his foot at half his shin, while he was still short of the cistern. He fell on his back, his leg gushing blood toward his companions. Then he crawled to the cistern until he plunged into it, seeking—as he claimed—to fulfill his oath. Ḥamzah followed him and struck him until he killed him in the cistern.
