Quraysh's Consultation about Withdrawing from Battle
Translation
✧ [The lineage of al-Ḥanẓaliyya] Ibn Hishām said: Al-Ḥanẓaliyya is the mother of Abū Jahl, and she is Asmāʾ bt. Mukharraba, one of the Banū Nahshil b. Dārim b. Mālik b. Ḥanẓala b. Mālik b. Zayd Manāt b. Tamīm. 'For I do not fear that any other than he will entangle the affair of the people,' meaning Abū Jahl b. Hishām. Then ʿUtba b. Rabīʿa stood up as an orator and said: 'O company of Quraysh, by God, you are not doing anything by meeting Muḥammad and his companions. By God, if you fall upon him, a man will not cease to look into the face of a man whose sight he dislikes, because he has killed his paternal cousin or his maternal cousin or a man of his clan. So turn back and leave Muḥammad between the rest of the Arabs. If they fall upon him, that is what you wanted; and if it is otherwise, they will find you and you will not have exposed from him what you seek.' Ḥakīm said: I went off until I came to Abū Jahl and found him shaking out a coat of mail of his from its bag, and he was greasing it (Ibn Hishām said: preparing it). I said to him: 'O Abū al-Ḥakam, ʿUtba sent me to you with such-and-such, because of what he said.' He said: 'By God, his lungs have swelled when he saw Muḥammad and his companions. Nay, by God, we will not return until God judges between us and Muḥammad. What ʿUtba said is not his true opinion, but he saw that Muḥammad and his companions are eaters of a slaughtered camel, and among them is his son, so he feared you for him.' Then he sent to ʿĀmir b. al-Ḥaḍramī and said: 'This is your ally, he wants to turn back with the people, and you have seen your revenge with your own eyes. Arise and invoke your protection and the killing of your brother.' So ʿĀmir b. al-Ḥaḍramī arose, uncovered himself, then cried out: 'O ʿAmr! O ʿAmr!' Thus war was inflamed, and the people were stirred up, and they became united upon the evil they were upon, and the opinion that ʿUtba had called them to was corrupted for the people. When Abū Jahl's saying, 'By God, his lungs have swelled,' reached ʿUtba, he said: 'He who dyes his anus will know whose lungs have swelled—mine or his.' Ibn Hishām said: Al-saḥr is the lung and what surrounds it of that which clings to the throat from above the navel. What is below the navel is the quṣb, and from it is his saying: 'I saw ʿAmr b. Luḥayy dragging his quṣb in the Fire.' Ibn Hishām said: Abū ʿUbayda related that to me. Then ʿUtba sought a helmet to put on his head, but he did not find in the army a helmet that would fit him because of the great size of his head. When he saw that, he wrapped a cloak of his around his head.
