Quraysh's Consultation about Withdrawing from Battle
Translation
✧ [Quraysh's consultation about turning back from fighting] Ibn Isḥāq said: My father Isḥāq b. Yasār and others among the people of knowledge narrated to me from elders among the Anṣār, who said: When the people had settled down, they sent ʿUmayr b. Wahb al-Jumaḥī, saying: "Estimate for us the companions of Muḥammad." He said: He made a circuit with his horse around the camp, then returned to them and said: "Three hundred men, a little more or less, but give me time so that I may see whether the people have an ambush or reinforcements." He said: He rode into the valley until he went far, but saw nothing, then returned to them and said: "I found nothing, but I have seen, O assembly of Quraysh, calamities carrying fates; the water-carrying camels of Yathrib carry the lethal death. A people who have with them no protection and no refuge except their swords. By God, I do not think that a man of them will be killed until he kills a man of you. If they take from you your equal numbers, then what good is life after that? So consider your course." When Ḥakīm b. Ḥizām heard that, he walked among the people and came to ʿUtbah b. Rabīʿah, saying: "O Abū al-Walīd, you are the elder of Quraysh and its chief, and the one obeyed among them. Would you like to be remembered among them with good until the end of time?" He said: "And what is that, O Ḥakīm?" He said: "Return with the people, and take upon yourself the matter of your ally ʿAmr b. al-Ḥaḍramī." He said: "I will do it. You are my surety for that. He is only my ally, so upon me is his blood-money and what was taken of his property. So go to Ibn al-Ḥanẓaliyyah."
