The Dream of Juhaym b. al-Ṣalt about the Slain of Quraysh

✧ [ The Return of al-Akhnas with Banū Zuhrah ] Al-Akhnas b. Sharīq b. ʿAmr b. Wahb al-Thaqafī, who was an ally of Banū Zuhrah, said while they were at al-Juḥfah: “O Banū Zuhrah, Allah has safeguarded your wealth for you, and has delivered your companion Makhramah b. Nawfal to you. You only went out to protect him and his property. Attribute cowardice to me and return, for there is no need for you to go forth without any loss. Do not heed what this one says,” meaning Abū Jahl. So they returned, and not a single Zahrī witnessed it. They obeyed him, and he was obeyed among them. No clan of Quraysh remained but that some of its people had gone forth, except Banū ʿAdī b. Kaʿb; not a single man of them went out. Banū Zuhrah returned with al-Akhnas b. Sharīq, and no one from these two tribes witnessed Badr. The people marched on. There occurred an exchange between Ṭālib b. Abī Ṭālib—who was among the people—and some of Quraysh. They said: “By Allah, we have come to know, O Banū Hāshim, even though you have come out with us, that your hearts are with Muḥammad ﷺ.” So Ṭālib returned to Makkah with those who returned. Ṭālib b. Abī Ṭālib said: O Allah, if Ṭālib is to raid In a band, as confederate or combatant, In a troop of these troops, Then let the despoiled be other than the despoiler, And let the vanquished be other than the victor. Ibn Hishām said: His saying “then let the despoiled” and his saying “and let the vanquished” are from more than one of the transmitters of the poetry.
