The Encampment of Quraysh at al-ʿUdwah and the Muslims at Badr
[ نُزُولُ قُرَيْشٍ بِالْعُدْوَةِ وَالْمُسْلِمِينَ بِبَدْرِ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَمَضَتْ قُرَيْشٌ حَتَّى نَزَلُوا بِالْعُدْوَةِ الْقُصْوَى مِنْ الْوَادِي، خَلْفَ الْعَقَنْقَلِ وَبَطْنِ الْوَادِي، وَهُوَ يَلَيْلُ، بَيْنَ بَدْرٍ وَبَيْنَ الْعَقَنْقَلِ، الْكَثِيبُ الَّذِي خَلْفَهُ قُرَيْشٌ، وَالْقُلُبُ بِبَدْرِ فِي الْعُدْوَةِ الدُّنْيَا مِنْ بَطْنِ يَلَيْلَ إلَى الْمَدِينَةِ. وَبَعَثَ اللَّهُ السَّمَاءَ، وَكَانَ الْوَدْيُ دَهْسًا، فَأَصَابَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَأَصْحَابُهُ مِنْهَا مَا لَبَّدَ لَهُمْ الْأَرْضَ وَلَمْ يَمْنَعْهُمْ عَنْ السَّيْرِ وَأَصَابَ قُرَيْشًا مِنْهَا مَا لَمْ يَقْدِرُوا عَلَى أَنْ يَرْتَحِلُوا مَعَهُ. فَخَرَجَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ يُبَادِرُهُمْ إلَى السَّمَاءِ، حَتَّى إذَا جَاءَ أَدُنَى مَاءٍ مِنْ بَدْرٍ نَزَلَ بِهِ
Translation
✧ [The Encampment of Quraysh at the Farther Side and the Muslims at Badr] Ibn Isḥāq said: Quraysh went on until they encamped at the farther side of the valley, behind al-ʿAqanqal and the bottom of the valley, which is Yalyal, between Badr and al-ʿAqanqal—the sand hill behind which Quraysh was—while the wells at Badr were on the nearer side of the bottom of Yalyal toward Madinah. And God sent the sky, and the watercourse was soft sand, so the Messenger of God ﷺ and his companions got from it what packed down the ground for them and did not hinder them from traveling, while Quraysh got from it what they could not move along with. So the Messenger of God ﷺ went out hastening with them toward the water, until when he came to the nearest water of Badr he stopped at it.
