Abu Bakr, ʿUmar, and al-Miqdad and Their Words on Jihad

Translation

✧ [Abū Bakr, ʿUmar, al-Miqdād, and their words concerning jihad] The news reached him about Quraysh—that they were marching to protect their caravan. He consulted the people and informed them about Quraysh. Abū Bakr al-Ṣiddīq stood and spoke, and he spoke well. Then ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb stood and spoke, and he spoke well. Then al-Miqdād b. ʿAmr stood and said: "O Messenger of God, proceed to what God has shown you, for we are with you. By God, we will not say to you as the Children of Israel said to Moses: 'Go, you and your Lord, and fight. We are sitting here.' But rather: 'Go, you and your Lord, and fight. We will fight alongside you both.' By the One who sent you with the truth, if you were to lead us to Birk al-Ghimād, we would fight alongside you in its defense until you reach it." The Messenger of God ﷺ said good words to him and prayed for him on account of that.
