The Messenger's ﷺ Seeking Assurance from the Ansar

Translation

✧ [The Messenger's ﷺ seeking assurance concerning the Anṣār] Then the Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Counsel me, O people," intending thereby the Anṣār. That was because they were the majority of the people, and because when they pledged allegiance to him at al-ʿAqabah, they said: "O Messenger of God, we are free of any obligation to protect you until you reach our land; when you reach us, you will be under our protection, and we will defend you as we defend our own sons and women." So the Messenger of God ﷺ feared that the Anṣār might think they were not obliged to help him except against an enemy who attacked him in Madinah, and that they were not obliged to march with him against an enemy from their own lands. When the Messenger of God ﷺ said that, Saʿd b. Muʿādh said to him: "By God, it is as if you mean us, O Messenger of God?" He said: "Yes." Saʿd said: "We have believed in you and declared you truthful, and we have testified that what you have brought is the truth, and on that basis we have given you our covenants and binding pledges to hear and obey. So go forth, O Messenger of God, to whatever you desire, for we are with you. By Him who sent you with the truth, if you were to lead us into this sea and wade into it, we would wade into it with you; not one man of us would stay behind. We do not dislike that you meet our enemy with us tomorrow. Indeed we are steadfast in war, true in encounter. Perhaps God will show you from us what will delight your eye. So march with us, with the blessing of God." The Messenger of God ﷺ was delighted by Saʿd's words, and that cheered him. Then he said: "March and be of good cheer, for God, may He be exalted, has promised me one of the two parties. By God, it is as if I now see the places where the people will fall."
