The War Between Kinanah and Quraysh and Their Truce on the Day of Badr
[ شِعْرُ مِكْرَزٍ فِي قَتْلِهِ عَامِرًا ] وَقَالَ مِكْرَزُ بْنُ حَفْصٍ فِي قَتْلِهِ عَامِرًا: لَمَّا رَأَيْتُ أَنَّهُ هُوَ عَامِرٌ تَذَكَّرْتُ أَشْلَاءَ الْحَبِيبِ الْمُلَحَّبِ وَقُلْتُ لِنَفْسِي: إنَّهُ هُوَ عَامِرٌ فَلَا تَرْهَبِيهِ، وَانْظُرِي أَيَّ مَرْكَبِ وَأَيْقَنْتُ أَنِّي إنْ أُجَلِّلَهُ ضَرْبَةً مَتَى مَا أُصِبْهُ بِالْفَرَافِرِ يَعْطَبْ خَفَضْتُ لَهُ جَأْشِي وَأَلْقَيْتُ كَلْكَلِي عَلَى بَطَلٍ شَاكِّي السِّلَاحِ مُجَرَّبِ وَلَمْ أَكُ لَمَّا الْتَفَّ رُوعِي وَرُوعُهُ عُصَارَةَ هُجُنٍ مِنْ نِسَاءٍ وَلَا أَبِ حَلَلْتُ بِهِ وِتْرِي وَلَمْ أَنْسَ ذَحْلَهُ إذَا مَا تَنَاسَى ذَحْلَهُ كُلُّ عَيْهَبِ قَالَ ابْنُ هِشَامٍ: الْفَرَافِرُ ( في غَيْرِ هَذَا الْمَوْضِعِ ): الرَّجُلُ الْأَضْبَطُ، وَفِي هَذَا الْمَوْضِعِ: السَّيْفُ )، وَالْعَيْهَبُ: الَّذِي لَا عَقْلَ لَهُ، وَيُقَالُ لِتَيْسِ الظِّبَاءِ وَفَحْلِ النَّعَامِ: الْعَيْهَبُ. ( قَالَ الْخَلِيلُ: الْعَيْهَبُ: الرَّجُلُ الضَّعِيفُ عَنْ إدْرَاكِ وِتْرِهِ )
Translation
✧ [The poetry of Mikraz concerning his killing of ʿĀmir] Mikraz b. Ḥafṣ said concerning his killing of ʿĀmir: When I saw that it was he, ʿĀmir, I remembered the severed limbs of the beloved, the much-pierced one. And I said to myself: It is he, ʿĀmir, so do not fear him, and look what mount he rides. And I was certain that if I should clothe him with a blow, whenever I strike him with the farāfir he would perish. I lowered my heart to him and cast my chest upon a hero, well-armed, tried in battle. And I was not, when my terror and his terror intertwined, the dregs of ignoble women nor of an ignoble father. By him I untied my vengeance and did not forget his blood-feud, when every dull-witted one forgot his blood-feud. Ibn Hishām said: Al-farāfir (in another place) means the left-handed man; in this place it means the sword. Al-ʿayhab is he who has no intelligence; and it is said of the buck of the gazelles and the male ostrich: al-ʿayhab. (Al-Khalīl said: Al-ʿayhab is the man too weak to attain his vengeance).
