The War Between Kinanah and Quraysh and Their Truce on the Day of Badr
Translation
✧ [The war between Kinānah and Quraysh and their mutual restraint on the day of Badr] Ibn Isḥāq said: When they had finished their preparations and resolved upon the march, they remembered the war that had been between them and the Banū Bakr b. ʿAbd Manāh b. Kinānah. They said: 'We fear that they may come upon us from behind.' The war that was between Quraysh and Banū Bakr was — as some of the Banū ʿĀmir b. Luʾayy related to me, from Muḥammad b. Saʿīd b. al-Musayyab — about a son of Ḥafṣ b. al-Akhyaf, one of the Banū Maʿīṣ b. ʿĀmir b. Luʾayy, who went out seeking a stray camel of his at Ḍajnān. He was a young boy with a forelock on his head, wearing a fine garment of his, and he was a handsome, clean lad. He passed by ʿĀmir b. Yazīd b. ʿĀmir b. al-Mulawwaḥ, one of the Banū Yaʿmur b. ʿAwf b. Kaʿb b. ʿĀmir b. Layth b. Bakr b. ʿAbd Manāh b. Kinānah, who was at Ḍajnān, being the chief of Banū Bakr at that time. He saw him and was pleased with him, so he said: 'Who are you, young man?' He said: 'I am a son of Ḥafṣ b. al-Akhyaf al-Qurashī.' When the boy turned away, ʿĀmir b. Zayd said: 'O Banū Bakr, do you have any blood due from Quraysh?' They said: 'Yes, by God, we have blood due from them.' He said: 'No man would kill this boy for one of his own men but that he would have taken full payment of his blood.' Then a man of Banū Bakr followed him and killed him in retaliation for blood that he had due from Quraysh. Quraysh spoke about it, and ʿĀmir b. Yazīd said: 'O company of Quraysh, we have had blood due from you. So whatever you wish: if you wish, pay us what is due to us from you, and we will pay what is due to you from us; and if you wish, it is only blood: a man for a man. Forgo what is due to you from us, and we will forgo what is due to us from you.' That boy became of little account to this clan of Quraysh, and they said: 'He has spoken truly: a man for a man.' They paid no attention to him and did not seek redress for him. Then, while his brother Mikraz b. Ḥafṣ b. al-Akhyaf was traveling at Marr al-Ẓahrān, he saw ʿĀmir b. Yazīd b. ʿĀmir b. al-Mulawwaḥ on a camel of his. When he saw him, he went towards him until he made it kneel, while ʿĀmir was wearing his sword slung over his shoulder. Mikraz struck him with his sword until he killed him, then he plunged his sword into his belly. Then he brought him to Makkah and hung him at night from the curtains of the Kaʿbah. When morning came, Quraysh saw the sword of ʿĀmir b. Yazīd b. ʿĀmir hanging from the curtains of the Kaʿbah, and they recognized it. They said: 'This is indeed the sword of ʿĀmir b. Yazīd; Mikraz b. Ḥafṣ attacked him and killed him.' So that was part of their affair. While they were in that state of their war, Islam intervened between the people, and they became occupied with it, until Quraysh resolved upon the march to Badr. Then they remembered what was between them and Banū Bakr, and they feared them.
