Iblis Incites Quraysh to March Out
[ إبْلِيسُ يُغْرِي قُرَيْشًا بِالْخُرُوجِ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ وَحَدَّثَنِي يَزِيدُ بْنُ رُومَانَ، عَنْ عُرْوَةَ بْنِ الزُّبَيْرِ، قَالَ: لَمَّا أَجَمَعَتْ قُرَيْشٌ الْمَسِيرَ ذَكَرَتْ الَّذِي كَانَ بَيْنَهَا وَبَيْنَ بَنِي بَكْرٍ، فَكَادَ ذَلِكَ يُثْنِيهِمْ، فَتَبَدَّى لَهُمْ إبْلِيسُ فِي صُورَةِ سُرَاقَةَ بْنِ مَالِكِ بْنِ جُعْشُمٍ الْمُدْلِجِيِّ، وَكَانَ مِنْ أَشْرَافِ بَنِي كِنَانَةَ، فَقَالَ لَهُمْ: أَنَا لَكُمْ جَارٌ مِنْ أَنْ تَأْتِيَكُمْ كِنَانَةُ مِنْ خَلْفِكُمْ بِشَيْءٍ تَكْرَهُونَهُ، فَخَرَجُوا سِرَاعًا
Translation
✧ [Iblīs inciting Quraysh to go forth] Ibn Isḥāq said: Yazīd b. Rūmān related to me, from ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr, who said: When Quraysh resolved to march, they remembered what had been between them and Banū Bakr, and that nearly turned them back. Then Iblīs appeared to them in the form of Surāqah b. Mālik b. Juʿshum al-Mudlijī, who was one of the nobles of Banū Kinānah, and he said to them: "I am a protector for you against Kinānah coming upon you from behind with anything you dislike." So they went forth swiftly.
