Quraysh's Preparation to March Out
[ تَجَهُّزُ قُرَيْشٍ لِلْخُرُوجِ ] فَتَجَهَّزَ النَّاسُ سِرَاعًا، وَقَالُوا: أَيَظُنُّ مُحَمَّدٌ وَأَصْحَابُهُ أَنْ تَكُونَ كَعِيرِ ابْنِ الْحَضْرَمِيِّ، كَلَّا وَاَللَّهِ لِيَعْلَمُنَّ غَيْرَ ذَلِكَ. فَكَانُوا بَيْنَ رَجُلَيْنِ، إمَّا خَارِجٍ وَإِمَّا بَاعِثٍ مَكَانَهُ رَجُلًا. وَأَوْعَبَتْ قُرَيْشٌ، فَلَمْ يَتَخَلَّفْ مِنْ أَشْرَافِهَا أَحَدٌ. إلَّا أَنَّ أَبَا لَهَبِ بْنَ عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ تَخَلَّفَ، وَبَعَثَ مَكَانَهُ الْعَاصِيَ بْنَ هِشَامِ بْنِ الْمُغِيرَةِ وَكَانَ قَدْ لَاطَ لَهُ بِأَرْبَعَةِ آلَافِ دِرْهَمٍ كَانَتْ لَهُ عَلَيْهِ، أَفْلَسَ بِهَا، فَاسْتَأْجَرَهُ بِهَا عَلَى أَنْ يُجْزِئَ عَنْهُ، بَعَثَهُ فَخَرَجَ عَنْهُ، وَتَخَلَّفَ أَبُو لَهَبٍ
Translation
✧ [Quraysh's preparation for departure] The people made ready swiftly, and they said: Does Muḥammad and his companions think that it will be like the caravan of Ibn al-Ḥaḍramī? Nay, by God, they will surely know otherwise. They were between two men, either going out or sending a man in his place. And Quraysh mustered fully, so that none of their nobles remained behind, except that Abū Lahab b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib stayed behind, and sent in his place al-ʿĀṣī b. Hishām b. al-Mughīrah, for he had clung to him for four thousand dirhams which he owed him, and with which he had become bankrupt, so he hired him with it on condition that he should suffice for him; he sent him forth, and he went out on his behalf, while Abū Lahab stayed behind.
