What Took Place Between Abu Jahl and al-ʿAbbas on Account of the Dream
Translation
✧ Al-ʿAbbās intended Abū Jahl to get at him, but the realization of the dream diverted him from that. He said: I went out on the third day after ʿĀtikah's dream, and I was sharp and angry, thinking that I had missed from him something I would love to have gotten from him. He said: I entered the mosque and saw him. By God, I was walking toward him, confronting him, so that he might repeat some of what he had said and I would fall upon him. He was a light man, sharp of face, sharp of tongue, sharp of gaze. He said: Then he went out toward the gate of the mosque, hurrying. He said: I said to myself: What is wrong with him, may God curse him? Is all this fear of me, lest I revile him? He said: But he had heard what I had not heard—the voice of Ḍamḍam b. ʿAmr al-Ghifārī, shouting in the belly of the valley, standing on his camel. He had slit his camel's nose, turned his saddle, and torn his shirt, and he was saying: O assembly of Quraysh, the caravan, the caravan! Your goods are with Abū Sufyān; Muḥammad has confronted it with his companions. I do not think you will overtake it. Help, help! He said: What came of the matter distracted me from him and distracted him from me.
