What Took Place Between Abu Jahl and al-ʿAbbas on Account of the Dream
[ مَا جَرَى بَيْنَ أَبِي جَهْلٍ وَالْعَبَّاسِ بِسَبَبِ الرُّؤْيَا ] قَالَ الْعَبَّاسُ: فَغَدَوْتُ لِأَطُوفَ بِالْبَيْتِ وَأَبُو جَهْلِ بْنُ هِشَامٍ فِي رَهْطٍ مِنْ قُرَيْشٍ قُعُودٌ يَتَحَدَّثُونَ بِرُؤْيَا عَاتِكَةَ، فَلَمَّا رَآنِي أَبُو جَهْلٍ قَالَ: يَا أَبَا الْفَضْلِ إذَا فَرَغْتَ مِنْ طَوَافِكَ فَأَقْبِلْ إلَيْنَا، فَلَمَّا فَرَغْتُ أَقْبَلْتُ حَتَّى جَلَسْتُ مَعَهُمْ، فَقَالَ لِي أَبُو جَهْلٍ: يَا بَنِي عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ، مَتَى حَدَثَتْ فِيكُمْ هَذِهِ النَّبِيَّةُ ؟ قَالَ: قُلْتُ: وَمَا ذَاكَ ؟ قَالَ: تِلْكَ الرُّؤْيَا الَّتِي رَأَتْ عَاتِكَةُ؛ قَالَ: فَقُلْتُ: وَمَا رَأَتْ ؟ قَالَ: يَا بَنِي عَبْدِ الْمُطَّلِبِ، أَمَا رَضِيتُمْ أَنْ يَتَنَبَّأَ رِجَالُكُمْ حَتَّى تَتَنَبَّأَ نِسَاؤُكُمْ، قَدْ زَعَمَتْ عَاتِكَةُ فِي رُؤْيَاهَا أَنَّهُ قَالَ: انْفِرُوا فِي ثَلَاثٍ، فَسَنَتَرَبَّصُ بِكُمْ هَذِهِ الثَّلَاثَ، فَإِنْ يَكُ حَقًّا مَا تَقُولُ فَسَيَكُونُ، وَإِنْ تَمْضِ الثَّلَاثُ وَلَمْ يَكُنْ مِنْ ذَلِكَ شَيْءٌ، نَكْتُبْ عَلَيْكُمْ كِتَابًا أَنَّكُمْ أَكْذَبُ أَهْلِ بَيْتٍ فِي الْعَرَبِ. قَالَ الْعَبَّاسُ: فَوَاَللَّهِ مَا كَانَ مِنِّي إلَيْهِ كَبِيرٌ، إلَّا أَنِّي جَحَدْتُ ذَلِكَ، وَأَنْكَرْتُ أَنْ تَكُونَ رَأَتْ شَيْئًا. قَالَ: ثُمَّ تَفَرَّقْنَا
Translation
✧ [What occurred between Abū Jahl and al-ʿAbbās because of the dream] Al-ʿAbbās said: In the morning I went to circumambulate the House, while Abū Jahl b. Hishām was sitting with a group of Quraysh talking about ʿĀtikah's dream. When Abū Jahl saw me, he said: O Abū al-Faḍl, when you finish your circumambulation, come to us. When I finished, I came and sat with them. Abū Jahl said to me: O Banū ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, when did this prophetess appear among you? He said: I said: What is that? He said: That dream which ʿĀtikah saw. He said: I said: And what did she see? He said: O Banū ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib, are you not satisfied that your men become prophets, until your women become prophetesses? ʿĀtikah claimed in her dream that he said: 'March forth in three; we shall wait for you these three. If what she says is true, it will happen; and if the three pass and nothing of that occurs, we shall write a document against you that you are the most lying household among the Arabs.' Al-ʿAbbās said: By God, I did not do much against him, except that I denied that and disclaimed that she had seen anything. He said: Then we separated.
