The Account of ʿAtikah bt. ʿAbd al-Muttalib's Dream

Translation

✧ Mention of the dream of ʿĀtikah bt. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib. [ʿĀtikah relates her dream to her brother al-ʿAbbās] Ibn Isḥāq said: He whom I do not distrust informed me, from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, and Yazīd b. Rūmān, from ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr, both said: ʿĀtikah bt. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib had seen, three nights before Ḍamḍam's arrival in Makkah, a dream that terrified her. She sent for her brother al-ʿAbbās b. ʿAbd al-Muṭṭalib and said to him: O my brother, by God, I saw a dream last night that alarmed me, and I fear that from it evil and calamity will befall your people. So keep secret what I tell you. He said to her: What did you see? She said: I saw a rider approaching on his camel until he halted at al-Abṭaḥ. Then he cried out at the top of his voice: 'Come forth, O treacherous ones, to your places of destruction in three [days].' I saw the people gather around him. Then he entered the mosque, the people following him, and while they were around him, his camel mounted with him onto the back of the Kaʿbah. Then he cried out similarly: 'Come forth, O treacherous ones, to your places of destruction in three [days].' Then his camel mounted with him onto the top of Abū Qubays. He cried out similarly. Then he took a rock and sent it down. It came hurtling until, when it was at the foot of the mountain, it shattered. There remained no house among the houses of Makkah, nor any dwelling, but a fragment of it entered it. Al-ʿAbbās said: By God, this is indeed a dream. So you, keep it secret, and do not mention it to anyone.
