The Muslims' Summons Against the Caravan and Abu Sufyan's Vigilance

Translation

✧ The Muslims' being urged toward the caravan and Abū Sufyān's caution. Ibn Hishām said: It is also said: ʿAmr b. al-ʿĀṣ b. Wāʾil b. Hāshim. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Muslim al-Zuhrī, ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah, ʿAbd Allāh b. Abī Bakr, and Yazīd b. Rūmān, on the authority of ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr and others of our scholars, on the authority of Ibn ʿAbbās—each of them related to me part of this tradition, and their traditions came together in what I have narrated of the story of Badr—they said: When the Messenger of God ﷺ heard that Abū Sufyān was coming from Syria, he urged the Muslims toward them and said: "This is the caravan of Quraysh, containing their wealth. Go out to it; perhaps God will give it to you as spoil." The people responded: some were quick and some were slow, because they did not think that the Messenger of God ﷺ would meet war. Abū Sufyān, when he approached the Ḥijāz, was gathering news and asking any riders he met, out of fear for the people's situation, until he obtained news from some riders that Muḥammad had called out his companions against him and his caravan. Then he became cautious. He hired Ḍamḍam b. ʿAmr al-Ghifārī and sent him to Makkah, commanding him to go to Quraysh and call them out to protect their wealth, and to inform them that Muḥammad had confronted it with his companions. Ḍamḍam b. ʿAmr went out quickly to Makkah.
