Some accounts of the hypocrites
Translation
✧ [The departure of Ibn Ubayy's people against him and his poetry concerning that] Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Muslim al-Zuhrī related to me, from ʿUrwah b. al-Zubayr, from Usāmah b. Zayd b. Ḥārithah, the beloved of the Messenger of God ﷺ, who said: The Messenger of God ﷺ rode to Saʿd b. ʿUbādah to visit him during an illness that had befallen him, on a donkey with a packsaddle, over which was a Fadakī velvet cloth, its noseband made of a palm-fiber rope, and the Messenger of God ﷺ seated me behind him. He said: He passed by ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy while he was in the shade of Muzāḥim, his fortress. Ibn Hishām said: Muzāḥim is the name of the fortress. Ibn Isḥāq said: Around him were men of his people. When the Messenger of God ﷺ saw him, he felt it improper to pass him by without dismounting, so he dismounted, greeted, then sat for a little while, recited the Qurʾān, called to God Almighty, reminded of God, warned, gave glad tidings, and cautioned. He said: And he was silent, not speaking, until when the Messenger of God ﷺ finished his speech, he said: O this one, there is nothing better than this speech of yours if it is true. So sit in your house, and whoever comes to you, tell it to him; and whoever does not come to you, do not burden him with it, and do not come to him in his gathering with what he dislikes of it. He said: Then ʿAbd Allāh b. Rawāḥah said, among men of the Muslims who were with him: Yes, come to us with it, and come to us in our gatherings, our dwellings, and our houses, for it is, by God, among what we love, and among what God has honored us with and guided us to. Then ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy said, when he saw from his people's opposition what he saw: Whenever your patron is your adversary, you will not cease to be humiliated, and those you wrestle will throw you down. Can a falcon rise without its wings? If one day its feathers are clipped, it falls. Ibn Hishām said: The second verse is from other than Ibn Isḥāq.
