Some accounts of the hypocrites

Translation

✧ Glimpses of the mention of the hypocrites [Ibn Ubayy and Ibn Ṣayfī] Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came to Madinah—as ʿĀṣim b. ʿUmar b. Qatādah narrated to me—while the chief of its people was ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy b. Salūl al-ʿAwfī, then one of the Banū al-Ḥublā, no two men of his people disputed his nobility; the Aws and the Khazraj had not, before him or after him, united upon a man from either of the two parties, until Islam came and changed him. And with him among the Aws was a man who was noble and obeyed among his people of the Aws: Abū ʿĀmir ʿAbd ʿAmr b. Ṣayfī b. al-Nuʿmān, one of the Banū Ḍubayʿa b. Zayd, and he was the father of Ḥanẓala, the one washed by angels on the day of Uḥud. He had become a monk in the Jāhiliyya and worn hair-cloth garments, and he was called al-Rāhib (the monk). They were both wretched in their nobility, and it harmed them. [The Islam of Ibn Ubayy] As for ʿAbd Allāh b. Ubayy, his people had strung beads for him to crown him and then make him king over them, when Allah Almighty brought them His Messenger ﷺ while they were in that state. When his people turned away from him to Islam, he bore malice, and he saw that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ had robbed him of a kingdom. When he saw that his people would accept nothing but Islam, he entered it reluctantly, persisting in hypocrisy and malice. [The persistence of Ibn Ṣayfī in his disbelief] As for Abū ʿĀmir, he would accept nothing but disbelief and separation from his people when they united upon Islam, so he left them for Makkah with some ten odd men, separating himself from Islam and from the Messenger of Allah ﷺ. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said—as Muḥammad b. Abī Umāma narrated to me from some of the family of Ḥanẓala b. Abī ʿĀmir—: "Do not say 'the monk,' but say 'the transgressor' (al-fāsiq)."
