The affair of al-Sayyid and al-ʿĀqib, and mention of the mutual imprecation

Translation

✧ [Their refusal of the mutual cursing] When the news from God about them came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, and the decisive ruling between him and them, and he was commanded with what he was commanded regarding invoking mutual cursing upon them if they rejected that against him, he called them to that. They said to him: "O Abū al-Qāsim, let us consider our affair, then we will come to you with what we wish to do regarding what you have called us to." So they turned away from him. Then they were alone with al-ʿĀqib, who was their man of judgment, and said: "O ʿAbd al-Masīḥ, what do you think?" He said: "By God, O assembly of Christians, you know that Muḥammad is a prophet sent by God, and he has brought you the decisive account of your companion. You know that no people ever invoked mutual cursing with a prophet but that their elders remained alive and their young ones grew up. It would be utter destruction for you if you did it. If you refuse anything but remaining in your religion and persisting in what you say about your companion, then make peace with the man and return to your lands." So they came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: "O Abū al-Qāsim, we have decided not to invoke mutual cursing with you, and to leave you upon your religion while we return to our religion. But send with us a man from your companions whom you approve of for us, to judge between us in matters concerning our wealth about which we have disagreed, for you are acceptable to us." [Appointing Abū ʿUbaydah over their affairs] Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Come to me in the evening, and I will send with you the strong, the trustworthy one." He said: ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb used to say: "I never loved authority as much as I loved it that day, hoping that I would be its holder. I went out early before noon. When the Messenger of God ﷺ had prayed the noon prayer with us, he said the salutation, then looked to his right and his left. I began stretching myself so that he would see me, but he kept looking with his gaze until he saw Abū ʿUbaydah b. al-Jarrāḥ. He called him and said: 'Go out with them, and judge between them with truth in what they have disagreed about.'" ʿUmar said: "So Abū ʿUbaydah took it."
