The affair of al-Sayyid and al-ʿĀqib, and mention of the mutual imprecation
Translation
✧ Ibn Hisham said: It has reached me that the chiefs of Najran used to inherit books in their possession. Whenever a chief of theirs died and leadership passed to another, he would place a seal upon those books, alongside the seals that had been placed before him, and he would not break them. Then the chief who held authority in the time of the Prophet ﷺ went out walking and stumbled. His son said to him: "May the remote one perish," meaning the Prophet ﷺ. His father said to him: "Do not do that, for he is a prophet, and his name is in the repositories," meaning the books. When he died, his son had no concern except to make haste and break the seals. He found in them mention of the Prophet ﷺ, so he embraced Islam, and his Islam was good, and he performed the pilgrimage. He is the one who says: To you she runs, her girth strap anxious, her fetus stretched across within her belly, opposing the religion of the Christians is her religion. Ibn Hisham said: al-waḍīn is the girth: the girth of the she-camel. Hisham b. ʿUrwah said: The people of Iraq added to it: al-ʿirāq: "her fetus stretched across within her belly." As for Abū ʿUbaydah, we recited it to him in this form. Ibn Isḥāq said: Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar b. al-Zubayr related to me, saying: When they came to the Messenger of God ﷺ in Madinah, they entered upon him in his mosque after he had prayed the afternoon prayer. They were wearing garments of striped Yemeni cloth, cloaks and mantles, in the beauty of the men of the Banū al-Ḥārith b. Kaʿb. He said: Some of those who saw them from among the Companions of the Prophet ﷺ said that day: "We have never seen a delegation like them." Their time for prayer came, so they stood in the mosque of the Messenger of God ﷺ to pray. The Messenger of God ﷺ said: "Leave them be." So they prayed facing the east.
