The affair of al-Sayyid and al-ʿĀqib, and mention of the mutual imprecation

Translation

✧ [The station of Abū Ḥārithah with the kings of the Romans] And Abū Ḥārithah had been honored among them and had studied their books, until his knowledge of their religion became excellent. And the kings of the Romans, of the Christians, had honored him, enriched him, and provided him servants, built churches for him, and extended to him marks of honor, because of what reached them of his knowledge and his diligent striving in their religion. [The reason for the Islam of Kūz b. ʿAlqamah] When they returned to the Messenger of God ﷺ from Najrān, Abū Ḥārithah sat upon a mule of his, facing toward the Messenger of God ﷺ, and at his side was a brother of his called Kūz b. ʿAlqamah—Ibn Hishām said: It is also said Kurz—and the mule of Abū Ḥārithah stumbled, so Kūz said: "May the far-off one stumble," meaning the Messenger of God ﷺ. Then Abū Ḥārithah said to him: "Rather you have stumbled." He said: "And why, my brother?" He said: "By God, he is indeed the Prophet whom we were awaiting." Then Kūz said to him: "What prevents you from him, when you know this?" He said: "What these people have done with us: they have honored us, enriched us, and shown us generosity, and they have refused anything but opposing him; so if I did so, they would strip from us all that you see." So his brother Kūz b. ʿAlqamah kept this secret from him about it, until he later embraced Islam. And it was he who related this account from him, as it has reached me.
