The affair of al-Sayyid and al-ʿĀqib, and mention of the mutual imprecation
أَمْرُ السَّيِّدِ وَالْعَاقِبِ وَذِكْرُ الْمُبَاهَلَةِ [ مَعْنَى الْعَاقِبِ وَالسَّيِّدِ وَالْأَسْقَفِ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَقَدِمَ عَلَى رَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ وَفْدُ نَصَارَى نَجْرَانَ، سِتُّونَ رَاكِبًا، فِيهِمْ أَرْبَعَةَ عَشَرَ رَجُلًا مِنْ أَشْرَافِهِمْ، فِي الْأَرْبَعَةَ عَشَرَ مِنْهُمْ ثَلَاثَةُ نَفَرٍ إلَيْهِمْ يَئُولُ أَمْرُهُمْ: الْعَاقِبُ، أَمِيرُ الْقَوْمِ وَذُو رَأْيِهِمْ، وَصَاحِبُ مَشُورَتِهِمْ، وَاَلَّذِي لَا يُصْدِرُونَ إلَّا عَنْ رَأْيِهِ، وَاسْمُهُ عَبْدُ الْمَسِيحِ، وَالسَّيِّدُ، لَهُمْ ثِمَالُهُمْ، وَصَاحِبُ رَحْلِهِمْ وَمُجْتَمَعِهِمْ، وَاسْمُهُ الْأَيْهَمُ، وَأَبُو حَارِثَةَ بْنُ عَلْقَمَةَ، أَحَدُ بَنِي بَكْرِ بْنِ وَائِلٍ، أَسْقُفُهُمْ وَحَبْرُهُمْ وَإِمَامُهُمْ، وَصَاحِبُ مِدْرَاسِهِمْ.
Translation
✧ The matter of al-Sayyid and al-ʿĀqib, and mention of the mubāhalah [the meaning of al-ʿĀqib, al-Sayyid, and al-usquf]. Ibn Isḥāq said: A delegation of the Christians of Najrān came to the Messenger of God ﷺ, sixty riders, among them fourteen men of their nobles; among the fourteen were three persons to whom their affair reverted: al-ʿĀqib, the amīr of the people, the holder of their opinion, the master of their counsel, and the one without whose opinion they did not act; his name was ʿAbd al-Masīḥ; and al-Sayyid, their thimāl, the keeper of their baggage and their gathering place; his name was al-Ayham; and Abū Ḥārithah b. ʿAlqamah, one of the Banū Bakr b. Wāʾil, their usquf, their ḥabr, their imām, and the keeper of their midrās.
