Their return to the Prophet ﷺ regarding the ruling of stoning
Translation
✧ [Their impudence regarding the essence of God and the Prophet's ﷺ anger on that account] Ibn Isḥāq said: I was told on the authority of Saʿīd b. Jubayr that he said: A group of Jews came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said, "O Muḥammad, this is God who created creation, so who created God?" He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ became angry until his color changed, then he rose against them in anger for his Lord. He said: Then Gabriel ﷺ came to him and calmed him, saying, "Lower your anger, O Muḥammad." And he brought him from God the answer to what they had asked him about: "Say: He is God, the One. God, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent." He said: When he recited it to them, they said, "Describe for us, O Muḥammad, how is His creation? How is His forearm? How is His upper arm?" The Messenger of God ﷺ became angrier than his first anger and rose against them. Then Gabriel ﷺ came to him and said to him the like of what he had said the first time, and he brought him from God Almighty the answer to what they had asked. God Almighty says: "They have not appraised God with true appraisal, while the earth entirely will be [within] His grip on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be folded in His right hand. Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him." Ibn Isḥāq said: ʿUtbah b. Muslim, client of Banū Taym, told me, on the authority of Abū Salamah b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, on the authority of Abū Hurayrah, who said: I heard the Messenger of God ﷺ say: "People will soon question one another until one of them says, 'This is God who created creation, so who created God?' When they say that, then say: 'Say: He is God, the One. God, the Eternal Refuge. He neither begets nor is born, nor is there to Him any equivalent.' Then let the man spit to his left three times and seek refuge in God from Satan the accursed." [Ibn Hishām's explanation of some rare words] Ibn Hishām said: al-ṣamad: the one to whom one turns and to whom one flees for refuge. Hind bt. Maʿbad b. Naḍlah said, weeping for ʿAmr b. Masʿūd and Khālid b. Naḍlah, her two paternal uncles, the Asadīs, who were the two whom al-Nuʿmān b. al-Mundhir al-Lakhmī killed and over whom he built the two shrines (al-Ghariyyān) that are in al-Kūfah: Alas, the announcer of death set out early with the two best of Banū Asad, with ʿAmr b. Masʿūd and with the chief, the Eternal Refuge.
