Their return to the Prophet ﷺ regarding the ruling of stoning
Translation
✧ [Their requesting a book from heaven] Ibn Isḥāq said: Maḥmūd b. Sayḥān, Nuʿmān b. Aḍāʾ, Baḥrī b. ʿAmr, ʿUzayr b. Abī ʿUzayr, and Sallām b. Mishkam came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: “Is it true, O Muḥammad, that this which you have brought is indeed truth from God? For we do not see it to be well-ordered as the Torah is well-ordered.” The Messenger of God ﷺ said to them: “By God, you know that it is from God. You find it written with you in the Torah. And if mankind and jinn gathered to bring the like of it, they would not bring it.” Then they said—all of them: Fataḥāṣṣ, ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṣūriyā, Ibn Ṣalūbā, Kinānah b. al-Rabīʿ b. Abī al-Ḥuqayq, Ashyaʿ, Kaʿb b. Asad, Shamwīl b. Zayd, and Jabal b. ʿAmr b. Sukaynah—“O Muḥammad, does no human or jinn teach you this?” He said: The Messenger of God ﷺ said to them: “By God, you know that it is from God and that I am the Messenger of God. You find that written with you in the Torah.” They said: “O Muḥammad, God does for His messenger, when He sends him, whatever He wills and decrees for him what He wishes. So send down upon us a book from heaven that we may read and know it; otherwise we will bring the like of what you bring.” Then God, exalted is He, sent down concerning them and what they said: “Say: If mankind and jinn gathered to bring the like of this Qurʾān, they would not bring its like, even if they were to one another supporters.” [Ibn Hishām’s explanation of some of the rare words] Ibn Hishām said: al-ẓahīr means “helper.” From this is the saying of the Arabs: “They supported one another against him,” that is, “they helped one another against him.” The poet said: O namesake of the Prophet, you have become for the religion a sustainer and for the imam a helper, that is, “a support”; and its plural is ẓuharāʾ. [Their asking him ﷺ about Dhū al-Qarnayn] Ibn Isḥāq said: Ḥuyayy b. Akhṭab, Kaʿb b. Asad, Abū Rāfiʿ, Ashyaʿ, and Shamwīl b. Zayd said to ʿAbd Allāh b. Salām when he became Muslim: “Prophethood is not among the Arabs; rather your companion is a king.” Then they came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and asked him about Dhū al-Qarnayn, and he related to them what had come to him from God, exalted is He, concerning him, of what he had related to Quraysh. They were among those who had commanded Quraysh to ask the Messenger of God ﷺ about him when they sent to them al-Naḍr b. al-Ḥārith and ʿUtbah b. Abī Muʿayṭ.
