Their return to the Prophet ﷺ regarding the ruling of stoning
Translation
✧ [Their asking about the coming of the Hour] Jabal b. Abī Qushayr and Shamwīl b. Zayd said to the Messenger of God ﷺ: "O Muḥammad, tell us, when will the Hour come, if you are a prophet as you say?" So God Most High sent down concerning them: "They ask you about the Hour, when will be its mooring? Say: its knowledge is only with my Lord; none shall reveal it at its time but He. It lies heavy in the heavens and the earth. It shall not come to you but suddenly. They ask you as if you were well informed about it. Say: its knowledge is only with God, but most people do not know." [Ibn Hishām's explanation of some unfamiliar words] Ibn Hishām said: "ayyāna mursāhā" means "matā mursāhā" (when is its mooring?). Qays b. al-Ḥudādiyya al-Khuzāʿī said: "I came, and the secret was hidden between me and her, to ask her: when will the one who departed return?" This verse is in a poem of his. "Mursāhā" means "muntahāhā" (its ultimate end), and its plural is "marāsī." Al-Kumayt b. Zayd al-Asadī said: "And those who hit the mark of what the people missed, and the mooring of the foundations of Islam" This verse is in a poem of his. "Mursā" of a ship is where it comes to rest. "Ḥafiyyun ʿanhā" (with inversion): he says, "They ask you about it as if you were solicitous of them, so that you tell them what you do not tell others." "Al-ḥafī" is the devoted one who keeps checking on others. In the Book of God: "Indeed, He has been gracious (ḥafiyyan) to me" (Q 19:47), and its plural is "aḥfiyāʾ." Aʿshā Banī Qays b. Thaʿlaba said: "If you ask about me, then many a questioner is solicitous about al-Aʿshā, wherever he went up" This verse is in a poem of his. "Al-ḥafī" (also) means the one who inquires deeply about the knowledge of something, who goes to great lengths in seeking it. [Their claim that ʿUzayr is the son of God] Ibn Isḥāq said: Salām b. Mishkam, Nuʿmān b. Awfā Abū Anas, Maḥmūd b. Diḥya, Shaʾs b. Qays, and Mālik b. al-Ṣayf came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said to him: "How can we follow you when you have abandoned our qiblah, and you do not assert that ʿUzayr is the son of God?" So God, Mighty and Majestic, sent down concerning that statement of theirs: "The Jews say, ʿUzayr is the son of God, and the Christians say, the Messiah is the son of God. That is their saying with their mouths; they imitate the saying of those who disbelieved before. God fight them! How are they deluded?" up to the end of the passage. [Ibn Hishām's explanation of some unfamiliar words] Ibn Hishām said: "yuḍāhiʾūna" means their saying resembles the saying of those who disbelieved, as when you relate a report and another relates the like of it, then he is imitating you.
