Their return to the Prophet ﷺ regarding the ruling of stoning
[ ادِّعَاؤُهُمْ أَنَّهُمْ عَلَى الْحَقِّ ] وَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ رَافِعُ بْنُ حَارِثَةَ، وَسَلَامُ بْنُ مِشْكَمٍ، وَمَالِكُ بْنُ الصَّيْفِ، وَرَافِعُ بْنُ حُرَيْمِلَةَ، فَقَالُوا: يَا مُحَمَّدُ، أَلَسْتَ تَزْعُمُ أَنَّكَ عَلَى مِلَّةِ إبْرَاهِيمَ وَدِينِهِ، وَتُؤْمِنُ بِمَا عِنْدَنَا مِنْ التَّوْرَاةِ، وَتَشْهَدُ أَنَّهَا مِنْ اللَّهِ حَقٌّ ؟ قَالَ: بَلَى، وَلَكِنَّكُمْ أَحْدَثْتُمْ وَجَحَدْتُمْ مَا فِيهَا مِمَّا أَخَذَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكُمْ مِنْ الْمِيثَاقِ فِيهَا، وَكَتَمْتُمْ مِنْهَا مَا أُمِرْتُمْ أَنْ تُبَيِّنُوهُ لِلنَّاسِ، فَبَرِئْتُ مِنْ إحْدَاثِكُمْ، قَالُوا: فَإِنَّا نَأْخُذُ بِمَا فِي أَيْدِينَا، فَإِنَّا عَلَى الْهُدَى وَالْحَقِّ، وَلَا نُؤْمِنُ بِكَ، وَلَا نَتَّبِعُكَ. فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى فِيهِمْ: قُلْ يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ لَسْتُمْ عَلَى شَيْءٍ حَتَّى تُقِيمُوا التَّوْرَاةَ وَالْإِنْجِيلَ وَمَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْكُمْ مِنْ رَبِّكُمْ وَلَيَزِيدَنَّ كَثِيرًا مِنْهُمْ مَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْكَ مِنْ رَبِّكَ طُغْيَانًا وَكُفْرًا فَلَا تَأْسَ عَلَى الْقَوْمِ الْكَافِرِينَ [ إِشْرَاكُهُمْ بِاللَّهِ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ النَّحَّامُ بْنُ زَيْدٍ، وَقَرْدَمُ بْنُ كَعْبٍ، وَبَحْرِيُّ بْنُ عَمْرٍو، فَقَالُوا لَهُ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ، أَمَا تَعْلَمُ مَعَ اللَّهِ إلَهًا غَيْرَهُ ؟ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: اللَّهُ لَا إلَهَ إلَّا هُوَ، بِذَلِكَ بُعِثْتُ، وَإِلَى ذَلِكَ أَدْعُو. فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ فِيهِمْ وَفِي قَوْلِهِمْ: قُلْ أَيُّ شَيْءٍ أَكْبَرُ شَهَادَةً قُلِ اللَّهِ شَهِيدٌ بَيْنِي وَبَيْنَكُمْ وَأُوحِيَ إِلَيَّ هَذَا الْقُرْآنُ لِأُنْذِرَكُمْ بِهِ وَمَنْ بَلَغَ أَئِنَّكُمْ لَتَشْهَدُونَ أَنَّ مَعَ اللَّهِ آلِهَةً أُخْرَى قُلْ لَا أَشْهَدُ قُلْ إِنَّمَا هُوَ إِلَهٌ وَاحِدٌ وَإِنَّنِي بَرِيءٌ مِمَّا تُشْرِكُونَ الَّذِينَ آتَيْنَاهُمُ الْكِتَابَ يَعْرِفُونَهُ كَمَا يَعْرِفُونَ أَبْنَاءَهُمُ الَّذِينَ خَسِرُوا أَنْفُسَهُمْ فَهُمْ لَا يُؤْمِنُونَ. [ نَهْيُهُ تَعَالَى لِلْمُؤْمِنِينَ عَنْ مُوَادَّتِهِمْ ] وَكَانَ رِفَاعَةُ بْنُ زَيْدِ بْنِ التَّابُوتِ، وَسُوَيْدُ بْنُ الْحَارِثِ قَدْ أَظْهَرَا الْإِسْلَامَ وَنَافَقَا فَكَانَ رِجَالٌ مِنْ الْمُسْلِمِينَ يُوَادُّونَهُمَا. فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى فِيهِمَا: يَا أَيُّهَا الَّذِينَ آمَنُوا لَا تَتَّخِذُوا الَّذِينَ اتَّخَذُوا دِينَكُمْ هُزُوًا وَلَعِبًا مِنَ الَّذِينَ أُوتُوا الْكِتَابَ مِنْ قَبْلِكُمْ وَالْكُفَّارَ أَوْلِيَاءَ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ إِنْ كُنْتُمْ مُؤْمِنِينَ إلَى قَوْلِهِ: وَإِذَا جَاءُوكُمْ قَالُوا آمَنَّا وَقَدْ دَخَلُوا بِالْكُفْرِ وَهُمْ قَدْ خَرَجُوا بِهِ وَاللَّهُ أَعْلَمُ بِمَا كَانُوا يَكْتُمُونَ
Translation
✧ [Their claim that they are upon the truth] Rāfiʿ b. Ḥārithah, Sallām b. Mishkam, Mālik b. al-Ṣayf, and Rāfiʿ b. Ḥuraymilah came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said, "O Muḥammad, do you not claim that you are upon the religion of Abraham and his faith, and that you believe in the Torah which we have, and that you testify that it is truly from God?" He said, "Yes, but you have introduced innovations and denied what is in it of the covenant that God took from you concerning it, and you have concealed from it what you were commanded to make clear to the people. I am innocent of your innovations." They said, "We hold fast to what is in our hands; we are upon guidance and truth, and we will not believe in you nor follow you." Then God the Exalted revealed concerning them: Say: O People of the Scripture, you have nothing until you uphold the Torah and the Gospel and what has been sent down to you from your Lord. And what has been sent down to you from your Lord will surely increase many of them in insolence and disbelief. So grieve not over the disbelieving people. [Their association of partners with God] Ibn Isḥāq said: Al-Naḥḥām b. Zayd, Qardam b. Kaʿb, and Baḥrī b. ʿAmr came to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said to him, "O Muḥammad, do you not know that there is a god other than God?" The Messenger of God ﷺ said, "God, there is no god but He. With that I have been sent, and to that I call." Then God revealed concerning them and their statement: Say: What thing is greatest as a witness? Say: God is witness between me and you. And this Qurʾān has been revealed to me that I may warn you with it and whomever it reaches. Do you indeed testify that there are other gods with God? Say: I do not testify. Say: He is only One God, and indeed I am innocent of what you associate. Those to whom We have given the Scripture recognize it as they recognize their own sons. Those who have lost their own souls, they do not believe. [God’s prohibition to the believers of showing affection to them] Rifāʿah b. Zayd b. al-Tābūt and Suwayd b. al-Ḥārith had outwardly displayed Islam and were hypocrites, and some men among the Muslims showed affection to them. Then God the Exalted revealed concerning them: O you who believe, do not take those who have taken your religion in mockery and play from among those who were given the Scripture before you, and the disbelievers, as allies. And fear God, if you are believers, up to His saying: And when they come to you, they say, "We believe," but they have entered with disbelief and departed with it, and God knows best what they conceal.
