Their return to the Prophet ﷺ regarding the ruling of stoning
[ قَصْدُهُمُ الْفِتْنَةَ بِرَسُولِ اللَّهِ ﷺ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَقَالَ كَعْبُ بْنُ أَسَدٍ، وَابْنُ صَلُوبَا، وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ صُورِيَّا، وَشَأْسُ بْنُ قَيْسٍ، بَعْضُهُمْ لِبَعْضٍ: اذْهَبُوا بِنَا إلَى مُحَمَّدٍ، لَعَلَّنَا نَفْتِنَهُ عَنْ دِينِهِ، فَإِنَّمَا هُوَ بَشَرٌ، فَأَتَوْهُ، فَقَالُوا لَهُ: يَا مُحَمَّدُ، إنَّكَ قَدْ عَرَفْتَ أَنَّا أَحْبَارُ يَهُودَ وَأَشْرَافُهُمْ وَسَادَتُهُمْ، وَأَنَّا إنْ اتَّبَعْنَاكَ اتَّبَعَتْكَ يَهُودُ، وَلَمْ يُخَالِفُونَا، وَأَنَّ بَيْنَنَا وَبَيْنَ بَعْضِ قَوْمِنَا خُصُومَةٌ، أَفَنُحَاكِمُهُمْ إلَيْكَ فَتَقْضِيَ لَنَا عَلَيْهِمْ، وَنُؤْمِنُ بِكَ وَنُصَدِّقُكَ، فَأَبَى ذَلِكَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ عَلَيْهِمْ. فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ فِيهِمْ: وَأَنِ احْكُمْ بَيْنَهُمْ بِمَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ وَلَا تَتَّبِعْ أَهْوَاءَهُمْ وَاحْذَرْهُمْ أَنْ يَفْتِنُوكَ عَنْ بَعْضِ مَا أَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ إِلَيْكَ فَإِنْ تَوَلَّوْا فَاعْلَمْ أَنَّمَا يُرِيدُ اللَّهُ أَنْ يُصِيبَهُمْ بِبَعْضِ ذُنُوبِهِمْ وَإِنَّ كَثِيرًا مِنَ النَّاسِ لَفَاسِقُونَ أَفَحُكْمَ الْجَاهِلِيَّةِ يَبْغُونَ وَمَنْ أَحْسَنُ مِنَ اللَّهِ حُكْمًا لِقَوْمٍ يُوقِنُونَ [ جُحُودُهُمْ نُبُوَّةِ عِيسَى عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَأَتَى رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ نَفَرٌ مِنْهُمْ: أَبُو يَاسِرِ بْنُ أَخْطَبَ، وَنَافِعُ بْنُ أَبِي نَافِعٍ، وَعَازِرُ بْنُ أَبِي عَازِرٍ، وَخَالِدٌ، وَزَيْدٌ، وَإِزَارُ بْنُ أَبِي إزَارٍ، وَأَشْيَعُ، فَسَأَلُوهُ عَمَّنْ يُؤْمِنُ بِهِ مِنْ الرُّسُلِ؛ فَقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ ﷺ: آمَنَّا بِاللَّهِ وَمَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْنَا وَمَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَى إِبْرَاهِيمَ وَإِسْمَاعِيلَ وَإِسْحَاقَ وَيَعْقُوبَ وَالْأَسْبَاطِ وَمَا أُوتِيَ مُوسَى وَعِيسَى وَمَا أُوتِيَ النَّبِيُّونَ مِنْ رَبِّهِمْ لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَيْنَ أَحَدٍ مِنْهُمْ وَنَحْنُ لَهُ مُسْلِمُونَ فَلَمَّا ذَكَرَ عِيسَى ابْنَ مَرْيَمَ جَحَدُوا نُبُوَّتَهُ، وَقَالُوا: لَا نُؤْمِنُ بِعِيسَى ابْنِ مَرْيَمَ وَلَا بِمَنْ آمَنَ بِهِ. فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى فِيهِمْ: قُلْ يَا أَهْلَ الْكِتَابِ هَلْ تَنْقِمُونَ مِنَّا إِلَّا أَنْ آمَنَّا بِاللَّهِ وَمَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَيْنَا وَمَا أُنْزِلَ مِنْ قَبْلُ وَأَنَّ أَكْثَرَكُمْ فَاسِقُونَ
Translation
✧ [Their aim to tempt the Messenger of Allah ﷺ] Ibn Ishaq said: Kaʿb b. Asad, Ibn Ṣalūbā, ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṣūriyā, and Shās b. Qays said to one another: 'Go with us to Muḥammad; perhaps we can tempt him from his religion, for he is only a human.' So they came to him and said: 'O Muḥammad, you know that we are the scholars of the Jews, their nobles, and their leaders. If we follow you, the Jews will follow you and will not oppose us. We have a dispute with some of our people; shall we bring them to you for judgment so that you may rule in our favor against them, and we will believe in you and accept you as truthful?' The Messenger of Allah ﷺ refused that for them. Then Allah revealed concerning them: 'And judge between them by what Allah has sent down, and do not follow their desires, and beware of them lest they tempt you away from some of what Allah has sent down to you. If they turn away, then know that Allah intends to afflict them for some of their sins, and indeed many of people are defiantly disobedient. Is it the judgment of ignorance they seek? Who is better than Allah in judgment for a people who are certain?' [Their denial of the prophethood of Jesus ﷺ ] Ibn Ishaq said: A group of them came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ: Abū Yāsir b. Akhṭab, Nāfiʿ b. Abī Nāfiʿ, ʿĀzir b. Abī ʿĀzir, Khālid, Zayd, Izār b. Abī Izār, and Ashyaʿ. They asked him about which messengers he believed in. The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: 'We believe in Allah and what has been sent down to us and what was sent down to Abraham, Ishmael, Isaac, Jacob, and the tribes, and what was given to Moses and Jesus and what was given to the prophets from their Lord. We make no distinction between any of them, and we are Muslims to Him.' When he mentioned Jesus son of Mary, they denied his prophethood and said: 'We do not believe in Jesus son of Mary, nor in anyone who believes in him.' Then Allah, exalted is He, revealed concerning them: 'Say, O People of the Scripture, do you resent us except because we believe in Allah and what has been sent down to us and what was sent down before, and because most of you are defiantly disobedient?'
