Translation
✧ [Their agreement to drop the boulder on the Messenger of Allah ﷺ] The Messenger of Allah ﷺ went out to the Banū al-Naḍīr to seek their help in the blood-money for the two men of ʿĀmir whom ʿAmr b. Umayyah al-Ḍamrī had killed. When they were alone with one another, they said: "You will not find Muḥammad closer than he is now. Who is the man who will ascend this house and drop a boulder on him, and so relieve us of him?" ʿAmr b. Jaḥḥāsh b. Kaʿb said: "I will." News of this came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, and he departed from them. God Most High then revealed concerning him and concerning what he and his people intended: "O you who believe, remember God's blessing upon you when a people intended to stretch out their hands against you, but He withheld their hands from you. Fear God, and in God let the believers put their trust" (Q 5:11). [Their claim to be the beloved of God] Nuʿmān b. Aḍāʾ, Baḥrī b. ʿAmr, and Shaʾs b. ʿAdī came to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and spoke with him, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ spoke with them, called them to God, and warned them of His vengeance. They said: "What do you frighten us with, Muḥammad? By God, we are the sons of God and His beloved," like the saying of the Christians. So God Most High revealed concerning them: "The Jews and the Christians say, 'We are the sons of God and His beloved.' Say: Then why does He punish you for your sins? Rather, you are humans from among those He created. He forgives whom He wills and punishes whom He wills. To God belongs the dominion of the heavens and the earth and what is between them, and to Him is the final return" (Q 5:18). [Their denial of any book sent down after Moses ﷺ ] Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ called the Jews to Islam, made it attractive to them, and warned them of other than God and His punishment, but they refused him and disbelieved in what he brought them. Muʿādh b. Jabal, Saʿd b. ʿUbādah, and ʿUqbah b. Wahb said to them: "O assembly of Jews, fear God. By God, you know that he is the Messenger of Allah. You used to mention him to us before his mission and describe him to us by his description." Rāfiʿ b. Ḥuraymilah and Wahb b. Yahūdhā said: "We never said this to you, and God has not sent down any book after Moses, nor sent any bringer of good tidings or warner after him." So God Most High revealed concerning that saying of theirs: "O People of the Book, Our Messenger has come to you, making clear to you after a period without messengers, lest you say, 'No bringer of good tidings or warner came to us.' Indeed, a bringer of good tidings and a warner has come to you. God is capable of all things" (Q 5:19). Then He related to them the story of Moses and what he met with from them, their violation of their covenant with him, and how they rejected what he brought them from God's command, until they wandered in the land for forty years as a punishment.
