What was revealed concerning their statement: 'None but the wicked among us have believed'

Translation

✧ [What was revealed concerning their saying: 'None believed but the worst of us'] Ibn Isḥāq said: When ʿAbd Allāh b. Salām, Thaʿlabah b. Saʿyah, Usayd b. Saʿyah, Asad b. ʿUbayd, and those Jews who accepted Islam with them embraced Islam, they believed, affirmed the truth, desired Islam, and became firmly established in it. The rabbis of the Jews, the people of disbelief among them, said: 'None believed in Muḥammad ﷺ and followed him but the worst of us. Had they been of the best of us, they would not have abandoned the religion of their forefathers and gone to other than it.' So God, exalted is He, sent down concerning that saying of theirs: 'They are not all alike. Among the People of the Scripture is an upright community who recite the verses of God during the hours of the night and prostrate.' [Ibn Hishām's explanation of some rare words] Ibn Hishām said: 'ānāʾ al-layl' means the hours of the night; its singular is 'iny'. Al-Mutanakhkhil al-Hudhalī, whose name is Mālik b. ʿUwaymir, said in mourning for his son Uthaylah: Ḥulwun wa-murrun ka-ʿaṭfi l-qidḥi shīmatuhū fī kulli inyin qaḍāhu l-laylu yantaʿilu This verse is from a poem of his. Labīd b. Rabīʿah said, describing a wild ass: Yuṭarribu ānāʾa l-nahāri kaʾannahū ghawiyyun saqāhu fī l-tijāri nadīmu This verse is from a poem of his. It is also said: 'inan' (shortened), according to what Yūnus informed me. 'They believe in God and the Last Day, enjoin what is right, forbid what is wrong, and hasten to good deeds. Those are among the righteous.'
