Something about the Day of Buʿāth

Translation

✧ [A note about the Day of Buʿāth] The Day of Buʿāth was a day on which the Aws and the Khazraj fought one another. On that day the victory belonged to the Aws over the Khazraj. Commanding the Aws that day was Ḥuḍayr b. Simāk al-Ashhali, the father of Usayd b. Ḥuḍayr; and commanding the Khazraj was ʿAmr b. al-Nuʿmān al-Bayāḍī, and both of them were killed. Ibn Hishām said: Abū Qays b. al-Aslat said: “Because I was bereaved of one possessed of protection, a deep-seated grief returned to me. If you do not kill him, then ʿAmr will bite his head with a sharp, whetted one.” These two verses are from a poem of his. The full account of the Day of Buʿāth is longer than what I have mentioned, and only what I have mentioned of my abridgement prevented me from setting it out completely. [Ibn Hishām’s explanation of some unusual words] Ibn Hishām said: “sanīn” means whetted, from “sannahū” when he sharpened it. Ibn Isḥāq said: So he did it. Then the people spoke, contended with one another, and boasted, until two men from the two clans leapt at one another on their knees: Aws b. Qayẓī, one of the Banū Ḥārithah b. al-Ḥārith of the Aws, and Jabbār b. Ṣakhr, one of the Banū Salimah of the Khazraj. They exchanged insults; then one of them said to his companion: “If you wish, we will restore it now just as it was in the beginning.” Both parties became angry and said: “We have done it. Your appointment is al-Ẓāhirah”—and al-Ẓāhirah is the ḥarrah (stony tract)—“to arms, to arms!” So they went out to it. News of that reached the Messenger of God ﷺ, and he went out to them with those of his Companions, the Emigrants, who were with him, until he came to them. He said: “O company of Muslims! God, God! Do you act upon the call of the Age of Ignorance while I am still among you, after God has guided you to Islam, honoured you through it, cut off from you by it the affair of the Age of Ignorance, delivered you by it from unbelief, and joined your hearts together by it?” The people knew that it was a prompting from Satan and a plot of their enemy. They wept, and the men of the Aws and the Khazraj embraced one another. Then they departed with the Messenger of God ﷺ, hearing and obeying. God had extinguished from them the plot of the enemy of God, Shās b. Qays. So God Most High sent down concerning Shās b. Qays and what he had done: “Say: O People of the Scripture, why do you disbelieve in the signs of God while God is witness over what you do? Say: O People of the Scripture, why do you turn away from the path of God those who believe, seeking to make it crooked, while you are witnesses? And God is not heedless of what you do.” And God sent down concerning Aws b. Qayẓī and Jabbār b. Ṣakhr and those of their people who were with them who did what they did, because of the affair of the Age of Ignorance that Shās brought upon them: “O you who believe, if you obey a party of those who were given the Scripture, they will turn you back after your faith into disbelievers. And how could you disbelieve while the verses of God are recited to you and His Messenger is among you? And whoever holds fast to God has been guided to a straight path. O you who believe, fear God as He ought to be feared, and do not die except as Muslims,” up to His saying, Most High: “And those—for them is a mighty punishment.”
