What was revealed concerning the prohibition of the Muslims taking the Jews as intimates

Translation

✧ [What was revealed concerning the prohibition of the Muslims from taking the Jews into their confidence] Ibn Isḥāq said: There were men among the Muslims who maintained close ties with men among the Jews, on account of the neighbourliness and alliance that existed between them. So God Most High revealed concerning them, forbidding them from taking them as confidants: “O you who believe, take not as confidants any besides yourselves; they will not spare any effort to ruin you. They long for what causes you distress. Hatred has already appeared from their mouths, and what their breasts conceal is greater. We have made clear to you the signs, if you understand. Here you are, you love them, but they do not love you, and you believe in the whole Book” — that is, you believe in your Book, and in what has passed of the Books before that — “while they disbelieve in your Book. So you were more deserving of hatred for them than they for you. And when they meet you, they say, ‘We believe’; but when they are alone, they bite their fingertips at you in rage. Say, ‘Die in your rage’” to the end of the narrative.
