Translation

✧ [Poetry of al-Farazdaq concerning the affair of the elephant] Ibn Hishām said: Al-Farazdaq—whose name is Hammām b. Ghālib, one of the Banū Mujāshiʿ b. Dārim b. Mālik b. Ḥanẓalah b. Mālik b. Zayd Manāh b. Tamīm—said, praising Sulaymān b. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān, satirizing al-Ḥajjāj b. Yūsuf, and mentioning the elephant and his army: When al-Ḥajjāj transgressed, when wealth made him transgress, He said: “I am one who will ascend the ladders.” So he was as the son of Nūḥ said: “I will ascend to a mountain that will protect me from the water.” God cast into his body the like of what He cast away from the white qiblah, possessor of sacred precincts— troops driving the elephant, until He returned them to dust, though they were haughty in their pride. You were aided as the House was aided when the great one of the polytheists, the non-Arabs, drove his elephant to it. These verses are in a qaṣīdah of his.
