Sirat Ibn Hisham 627
The Jews' disbelief in him ﷺ after seeking victory through him, and what was revealed concerning that
Translation
✧ [The Jews' disbelief in him ﷺ after they had sought victory through him, and what was revealed concerning that] Ibn Isḥāq said: It has reached me, on the authority of ʿIkrimah, the mawlá of Ibn ʿAbbās, or on the authority of Saʿīd b. Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās: The Jews used to seek victory over the Aws and the Khazraj through the Messenger of God ﷺ before his mission. But when God sent him from among the Arabs, they disbelieved in him and denied what they had used to say about him. Muʿādh b. Jabal and Bishr b. al-Barāʾ b. Maʿrūr, the brother of the Banū Salamah, said to them: "O company of Jews, fear God and submit, for you used to seek victory over us through Muḥammad while we were polytheists, and you would tell us that he would be sent, and you described him to us by his description." Then Sallām b. Mishkam, one of the Banū al-Naḍīr, said: "He has not brought us anything we recognize, and he is not the one we used to mention to you." So God revealed concerning that, regarding their saying: "And when there came to them a Book from God confirming what was with them—though beforehand they had been seeking victory over those who disbelieved—then when there came to them what they recognized, they disbelieved in it. So the curse of God be upon the disbelievers."
