What was revealed concerning Abū Yāsir and his brother

Translation

✧ [What was revealed concerning Abū Yāsir and his brother] Ibn Isḥāq said: Among those concerning whom the Qurʾān was revealed, specifically from the rabbis and the disbelieving Jews who used to question him and try to trip him up in order to confound the truth with falsehood—as was mentioned to me from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAbbās and Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Riʾāb—was that Abū Yāsir b. Akhṭab passed by the Messenger of God ﷺ while he was reciting the opening of al-Baqarah: “Alif Lām Mīm. That is the Book, in which there is no doubt.” He went to his brother Ḥuyayy b. Akhṭab along with some men of the Jews and said: “Learn, by God, I heard Muḥammad reciting among what was revealed to him: ‘Alif Lām Mīm. That is the Book.’” They said: “You heard him?” He said: “Yes.” So Ḥuyayy b. Akhṭab walked with that group of Jews to the Messenger of God ﷺ and they said to him: “O Muḥammad, has it not been mentioned to us that you recite among what was revealed to you: ‘Alif Lām Mīm. That is the Book’?” The Messenger of God ﷺ said: “Yes, indeed.” They said: “Did Gabriel bring it to you from God?” He said: “Yes.” They said: “God sent prophets before you, and we do not know that He made clear to any prophet among them the length of his reign or what his community would consume, except you.” Then Ḥuyayy b. Akhṭab turned to those with him and said: “Alif is one, Lām is thirty, Mīm is forty, so this is seventy-one years. Would you enter a religion whose reign and the sustenance of whose community is only seventy-one years?” Then he turned to the Messenger of God ﷺ and said: “O Muḥammad, is there anything else with this?” He said: “Yes.” He said: “What?” He said: “Alif Lām Mīm Ṣād.” He said: “This, by God, is heavier and longer: Alif is one, Lām is thirty, Mīm is forty, Ṣād is ninety, so this is one hundred sixty-one years. Is there anything else with this, O Muḥammad?” He said: “Yes, Alif Lām Rāʾ.” He said: “This, by God, is heavier and longer: Alif is one, Lām is thirty, Rāʾ is two hundred, so this is two hundred thirty-one. Is there anything else with this, O Muḥammad?” He said: “Yes, Alif Lām Mīm Rāʾ.” He said: “This, by God, is heavier and longer: Alif is one, Lām is thirty, Mīm is forty, Rāʾ is two hundred, so this is two hundred seventy-one years.” Then he said: “Your affair has been made obscure to us, O Muḥammad, so that we do not know whether you have been given little or much.” Then they got up and left him. Abū Yāsir said to his brother Ḥuyayy b. Akhṭab and to the rabbis with him: “What do you know? Perhaps all of this has been combined for Muḥammad: seventy-one, one hundred sixty-one, two hundred thirty-one, two hundred seventy-one—that is seven hundred and thirty-four years.” They said: “His affair has become confused for us.” They claim that these verses were revealed concerning them: “Among them are verses that are clear—they are the foundation of the Book—and others that are ambiguous.” Ibn Isḥāq said: I have heard someone I do not suspect from the people of knowledge mention that these verses were revealed concerning the people of Najrān, when they came to the Messenger of God ﷺ asking him about Jesus, son of Mary ﷺ. Ibn Isḥāq said: And Muḥammad b. Abī Umāmah b. Sahl b. Ḥunayf narrated to me that he had heard that these verses were revealed concerning a group of Jews, but he did not explain that to me. God knows best which of these it was.
