Translation
✧ [His letter ﷺ to the Jews of Khaybar] Ibn Isḥāq said: The Messenger of God ﷺ wrote to the Jews of Khaybar, according to what a freedman of the family of Zayd b. Thābit narrated to me, from ʿIkrimah or from Saʿīd b. Jubayr, from Ibn ʿAbbās: In the name of God, the Compassionate, the Merciful. From Muḥammad, Messenger of God ﷺ, the companion of Moses and his brother, and the confirmer of what Moses brought: Lo, God has said to you, O people of the Torah—and you will find that in your Book: "Muḥammad is the Messenger of God, and those with him are hard against the unbelievers, merciful among themselves; you see them bowing, prostrating, seeking bounty from God and good pleasure; their mark is on their faces from the effect of prostration. That is their likeness in the Torah, and their likeness in the Gospel is as a seed that puts forth its shoot and strengthens it, and it grows stout and rises straight upon its stalk, delighting the sowers, so that through them He may enrage the unbelievers. God has promised those of them who believe and do righteous deeds forgiveness and a great reward." And I adjure you by God, and I adjure you by what was sent down upon you, and I adjure you by Him who fed those of your tribes before you the manna and the quails, and I adjure you by Him who dried up the sea for your fathers until He delivered them from Pharaoh and his work—will you not tell me: do you find in what God sent down upon you that you should believe in Muḥammad? If you do not find that in your Book, then there is no compulsion upon you. The right way has become distinct from error—and I call you to God and to His Prophet. [Ibn Hishām's explanation of some rare words] Ibn Hishām said: shaṭʾuhu means its sprouts, and the singular is shiṭʾah. The Arabs say: ashṭaʾa al-zarʿ when it puts forth its sprouts. And āzarahu means it helped it, so that what was before became like the mothers. Imruʾ al-Qays b. Ḥujr al-Kindī said: In a curve whose growth the ḍāl-tree has helped, as armies of successful and disappointed warriors pass along. And this verse is in a qaṣīdah of his. And Ḥumayd b. Mālik al-Arqaṭ, one of the Banū Rabīʿah b. Mālik b. Zayd Manāh, said: A crop and green herbs, helped in their growth. And this verse is in an urjūzah of his. And sūqihi (unvocalized as suq?) is the plural of sāq, meaning the stalk of the tree.
