The Jews' denial of the prophethood of David (peace be upon him) and God's refutation of them
[ إنْكَارُ الْيَهُودِ نُبُوَّةَ دَاوُدَ - عَلَيْهِ السَّلَامُ - وَرَدُّ اللَّهِ عَلَيْهِمْ ] قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَذَلِكَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ﷺ فِيمَا بَلَغَنِي - لَمَّا ذَكَرَ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنَ دَاوُدَ فِي الْمُرْسَلِينَ، قَالَ بَعْضُ أَحْبَارِهِمْ: أَلَا تَعْجَبُونَ مِنْ مُحَمَّدٍ، يَزْعُمُ أَنَّ سُلَيْمَانَ بْنَ دَاوُدَ كَانَ نَبِيًّا، وَاَللَّهِ مَا كَانَ إلَّا سَاحِرًا. فَأَنْزَلَ اللَّهُ تَعَالَى فِي ذَلِكَ مِنْ قَوْلِهِمْ وَمَا كَفَرَ سُلَيْمَانُ وَلَكِنَّ الشَّيَاطِينَ كَفَرُوا أَيْ بِاتِّبَاعِهِمْ السِّحْرَ وَعَمَلِهِمْ بِهِ. وَمَا أُنْزِلَ عَلَى الْمَلَكَيْنِ بِبَابِلَ هَارُوتَ وَمَارُوتَ وَمَا يُعَلِّمَانِ مِنْ أَحَدٍ قَالَ ابْنُ إسْحَاقَ: وَحَدَّثَنِي بَعْضُ مَنْ لَا أَتَّهِمُ عَنْ عِكْرِمَةَ، عَنْ ابْنِ عَبَّاسٍ، أَنَّهُ كَانَ يَقُولُ: الَّذِي حَرَّمَ إسْرَائِيلُ عَلَى نَفْسِهِ زَائِدَتَا الْكَبِدِ وَالْكُلْيَتَانِ وَالشَّحْمَ، إلَّا مَا كَانَ عَلَى الظَّهْرِ، فَإِنَّ ذَلِكَ كَانَ يُقَرَّبُ لِلْقُرْبَانِ، فَتَأْكُلَهُ النَّارُ
Translation
✧ [The Jews' denial of the prophethood of Dāwūd ﷺ and Allah's refutation of them] Ibn Isḥāq said: That is because the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, as it has reached me—when he mentioned Sulaymān b. Dāwūd among the messengers, one of their rabbis said: "Are you not amazed at Muḥammad? He claims that Sulaymān b. Dāwūd was a prophet. By Allah, he was nothing but a sorcerer." So Allah, exalted be He, revealed concerning that from their saying: "And Sulaymān did not disbelieve, but the devils disbelieved"—that is, by their following sorcery and practicing it—"and what was sent down upon the two angels at Bābil, Hārūt and Mārūt, and they do not teach anyone" Ibn Isḥāq said: And someone whom I do not suspect narrated to me from ʿIkrimah, from Ibn ʿAbbās, that he used to say: What Isrāʾīl forbade for himself were the two lobes of the liver and the two kidneys and the fat, except what was on the back, for that used to be offered as a sacrifice, and the fire would consume it.
